What is this contagious infection? There's few things that are contagious with rats.
Whatever the bacteria is. They just called and told me the culture was contagious and that I was to isolate him, they didn't tell me what it was exactly

Call back and find out. Then you can do your own research, as to whether it could affect you, how it can spread to your other boys etc.

Too bad. Most abscesses are infected with staph aureus (most common) or a type of streptococcus. If you get the pus on your hands you have to wash them, and the abscesses need to be drained.

Did they lance his abscess? Flush it out?

No all the pus they got out was when they did a FNA for cancer.

I wonder if it could be klebsiella?

but didn't that sample have to be sent away for analysis? This seemed to be determined in-house.
The pus they got was only looked at under the microscope at the office so no it wasn't sent anywhere.

They won't know if its contagious or not then...so don't panic.

Now you will have to get the abscess to open up with sitz baths and warm water. Wear long sleeves and keep a towel nearby. It shouldn't take long or the abscess to come to the surface, a scab to form, then soften and come off...then you'll have to flush at least twice a day with a saline solution (no ointments) until its no longer producing pus, and is healing towards the skin surface.

Like Shelagh said they have no way of knowing if its contagious and most often abscesses aren't so I would put your boy back in with his buddies so he doesn't become depressed (if you separated him in the first place).

Hes separated right now but not because of that. He's been mean ever since this spot showed up, when it was drained during the FNA he was back to his old sweet self but now its filled with pus again and that temper is back and I don't want any more blood shed.

I have had a lot of abscess and none showed any sign of pain from them. If he is getting attitude from pain, i would check the rest of him over.

Agreed and also maybe try a small dose of metacam to see if that improves his mood. Was there any external scratches or anything to indicate the cause of the abscess?

There is a scratch near it but that's the only thing I can find. I keep checking him over and can't find anything different besides that one spot and the scratch. It could have been his tooth but its actually fixed itself after it broke and looks so much better.

It broke about a month ago. I did not get a chance to keep an eye on it after because all my boys were moved to me ex's. It was getting white and funky the last time I saw it but now its getting that healthy carrot look to it and its growing striaght
