I took 3 of my girls to the vet to get weighed today during my cat Grimalkin's appointment, I would have brought the other two girls but it was hard enough with my 20 pound cat and the 3 girls as it was lol. I'm just wondering what is a standard healthy weight for an adult female? Meadow has lost weight since I got her (she was ENORMOUS when I first got her) but she's still way bigger then the other girls. I'm taking Bella & Chiyo next week, but here are the weights for the girls from today:

Lilybean: 287g
Meadow: 375g
Kyah: 208g

Kyah is only about 5 months old though, so not an adult.

Are these healthy weights? Meadow is quite a bit heavier then the other two, does she weigh too much? She's also a bit bigger in size then the others as well.

I have 5 girls and they range in weights... I'd say the healthest one is 12 ounces(about 340g) she looks good/normal while two of the others look fat and my old girl looks super skinny at 10.1 ounces :( . But my 16m/o is also 13.5ounce but she doesn't look fat like the younger two.. Maybe because of muscle mass??

I'd say it depends on how your oldest looks at her weight.. I wouldn't compare her to the younger ones tho as she's full grown by now. The younger girls sound good tho :wink2:

It really depends on the rat. Some rats are made longer and more muscle while others are petite. But generally girls should be under 400 grams and boys should be under 600 grams. I have had males be way to fat at 500 grams, while others are a good weight at 550 grams.

When I weighed my bunch a couple of weeks ago, the smallest was 288g, and the FATTEST was 554g! And she's a fattie because, plain and simple, she eats the most. Everyone else is what I would consider normal body condition. I don't know what it is about her that makes her over-eat. Just like people, I guess.....

Yours sound well within normal range. As Jorats said, though, a lot depends on length. My Janie was not fat at 400 g (although she later got bigger!), neither were some of my other girls. Clara, though, looks too plump at 350.

And some rats are just very slim throughout their lives.

I have a little ratty who is in the 150-180 grams range, she has significantly increased in weight since I've owned her, but has plateaued around there. She is very small, my vet says she is a healthy weight (she is just a petite girl!). My biggest girl is about 350g, she is slim but healthy too!

Since weight can be so variable, what does a healthy body condition look/feel like?

Does anyone have any pictures that show Too skinny, Too fat and just right :) ?

Take a look at a squirrel outside and that's how a rat should look. You should not be able to feel their ribs completely but only slightly, you should always see well defined arm and leg muscles. When they sit to eat, they shouldn't turn into a blob of rat but you should see where his thigh start and tummy ends.

This is my plus sized model Hazel......she is *cough* a little over 500 grams.

This is Hazel's sister Tilly....she is a trim 375 grams.

You shouldn't see any body bulges :giggle: same as on us. A covering over the ribs and back bone........but not sunken in looking either......

Here is a girl I fostered who was very thin,

Dahlas.. that last girl is so tiny.. :( And Hazel is a beauty of a plus-sizer. :giggle:

I had a three month old girl weigh at almost 200 grams,
and another three month old girl (from a seperate litter) be very tiny, and only weigh 92 grams.

 Dahlas, your ratties are so sweet and beautiful! Hazel looks a lot like my Megan (RIP). She was plus sized but very beautiful and (mostly) healthy until she was almost three years old. Tilley is a lovely girl, too.

They are good contrast photos. I bet you managed to fatten up that poor sweet skinny foster girl before she went off to her forever home.

Of course, for the super-duper-plus-sized ratties we can look at photos of some of the Rat Train ratties. Shelagh had a great before & after photo of one of her girls.

i've never really had a plus-sized rat. but i've had an extremley underweight one :( when wolf was really sick, he wasted away to skin and bone..

I had one girl who stayed very slimmed throughout her adult life but became what appeared to be emaciated in her old age. I tried everything to get some weight on that girl. But Mielle remained sickly thin but was happy, energetic and lived to be 38 months old. My Bijou was a huge blob of a rat. She got HED and since she was already overweight, she just stopped moving. She passed at 41 months but between the two girls Mielle had a better quality old age than Bijou.
Then there's Loki... she kept a very nice slim body and even in old age she remained a lovely size... she passed at 45 months.
