Baxter is now approximately 16 months old now and has changed from the young silvered black I had originally rescued. He's rusted out a lot and I find his skin is a lot looser with less weight (which is a good thing because he was definitely rolly in his younger days).

Should older ratties be changed to a different food or add more fat? He only lives with Simon, who is about the same age. They eat free choice blocks, veggies and bits of whatever we're eating each day (chicken bones, pizza crusts, salad, pasta, etc).

I know with dogs and cats it's better to keep them a little lighter to ease strain on joints and organs as they get older, but not sure about rats.

I prefer to keep my rats a bit on the leaner side in general. I do find as they age, the excess weight can be a bother.
Give my boy a kiss for me.

I have noticed some of my rats are getting bigger with age, but some of my boys the weight is shifting and they are not as heavy as they were in their prime!

Usually seniors need less fat in the lab block. I do know that some older rats are given ensure. So maybe someone can answer that one. I would like to know since i have about 6 or 7 that are getting old on me fast.

We need pictures of your boys!

This is the time when you want to limit proteins and bad fat. I do recommend the good fat to keep a good metabolism going. Good fats like olive oils, flax...You could add it to their diet.
16 months is still young in my book although, rats all age at different rates unfortunately. If you feel this came on suddenly, a thorough vet check wouldn't hurt.
