This may be a little sad, but I need advice on what to get, and also have someone sew some up for me.

As most of you know, I have a lot of losses, and each one is special to me. I normally wrap them up in old fleece, but;

1) I SUCK at cutting fleece, always making it the wrong shape, or too small, so its a waste

2) I find this the hardest part before taking in a sweet rattie to be pts at the vets.

I was thinking of getting someone to quickly run up either some cotton sacks in slightly different sizes, or some flat square's that are hemmed quickly, then I can still fold up my babies with their afterlife goodies. I would then have a little supply that I could just pull out instead of having to try to see through my tears to badly cut another piece of fleece. These would also be a little more special in honoring my fallen comrades.

What do you think?

that is something that I've actually wanted to make But I didn't know what ppl would think of it

I'll make em for you, same colors as you usually like?

I love this idea. I have saved old well-chewed hammocks (especially if it was the departed ratty's favourite) to put their bodies in when I send them for cremation, but I have often thought it would be nice to have a little shroud for them.

I have that issue right now. Tomorrow I have to take Mikey in to be pts, and I want to have something nice for him.

So Petunia, you now have a new product!

I like to bury in cotton, because fleece doesn't biodegrade. =) I know, I'm a smelly hippie. I use old bedsheet strips and sew up pouches that work like fold over sandwich bags, with the flap, and we tuck them in before burial. Would be happy to sew you some if you haven't found a source yet.

Usually any rat I'm bringing in is being carried in some box or carrier that already has one of their blankies or some fabric from home for them to snuggle in. Unless I request something else be used, the vet usually wraps them in that, which is fine because it is familiar to them and I like knowing they are being laid to rest in something that already smells like home. At other times, they have been wrapped in some cloth from the vet, and at home I have added a favorite hammock to that.

I did that also along with the favourite food they liked(dry food mind you no cereal :giggle: ) and some monies to pass on to other ratties up there who do not get into rattie heaven(i got this idea from i think lilspaz68 way back when).

such a sweet idea, when I get my own house, and start putting them in my back yard instead of cremation, I think I'lll do this too!

I think this is a great idea.

Moon, you REALLY missed your calling...
do me a favor and look into it, you are just too good at it to waste it!!!

and yes Petunia, you do have a new product!!! YAY!!!

I wrap my kids in a paper towel - yes, even more biodegradable than cotton...
I make glass beads for a hobby. I pick out a bead to bury with them.
Hundreds of years from now people are going to be scratching their heads as they unearth a rattie skeleton with a perfectly preserved glass bead. Oh, what strange religion was this?! Hahahaha!

thanks to you kscanuck785, I'll have the cotton fabric to make these with  thanks so much for your kind offer to send me a whole box of material!!

but I dunno, it would feel funny to charge for them....
but then I have a hard time charging for anything
maybe just for the shipping and materials.
I don't think I"m cut out to be a business person. I shoulda been born into a rich family, I'd rather just send gifts :giggle:

I'll make a couple of different styles and see what people prefer

Got some samples made up, but my camera has decided it doesn't want to work so grrrr, I'm gonna send some to Shelagh to find out if the sizes are good and then I'll put add some to the website/photo stream

I'll probably make some fleece ones too, even if people don't want to use them for burial due to fleece not being biodegradable I thought it might be nice to have something soft and more substantial then cotton to bring your loved ones home from the vet in, or maybe for wrapping them before cremation...?

I never thought about the materials being biodegradable before, and have always used quite a bit of coverings because it makes me feel better, thinking they are in something soft and warm. I know, I know, it doesn't matter at that point to a deceased critter but it does to me. Makes it a little bit easier for me to let them go.
