I'm always in such a rush when one of my rats get sick and I need to start them on Baytril asap ..I always need to come on here to ask what the dose should be. If someone could walk me through it step by step ..I would not need to be in such a panic.

I'll use Oscars weight as an example.

Weight: 610 grams
Baytril: 50 ml/mg

I'd like to learn both the low end and high end.

Anyone wanna teach me?

ETA:
I might as well ask for someone to walk me through Doxy, Infant IBP and Pred as well ..since these are the common medications I use.

Doxy: 500 mg capsule mixed with 25 ml water (low end/high end)

IBP: 200mg/5ml (low end/high end)

Pred: 1mg/ml (low end/high end)

I don't learn very fast ..I need things explained step by step :giggle:

I have always been prescribed Baytril at 10mg/kg, so I am not sure if that's high or low end. If Oscar weighs 610g, or .61 kg, his dose should be 6.1mg 2x a day. 6.1/50=.122 so his dose would be .12cc's 2x a day. What you can do is program the formulas to calculate different medication dosages (you can even do high and low end if you like) into a spread sheet so that you only have to plug in the rats weight when you need the dose.

Thanks Victoria! that helps alot.

Bug me tonight Renee. :) I am at work right now, but its Friday night WOOT, so I will have time to help you :)

You might have to wait since I need to clean some cages in between as well :)

Would be a good idea to keep them all in this thread... we'd have a one stop reference if we got caught in an emergency! Good idea Renee!

If anyone can help explain the others like Victoria explained it would be great! ..I don't have excel on my computer, so I need to know how to work it out the old fashion way.

use google docs and I will send you my excel calculation sheet.

The old fashioned way is Math :p

You may want to bookmark the rmca drug chart that many use. It often has lower end dosages.
http://www.rmca.org/Articles/dchart.htm

I would also recommend you purchase a copy of the Rat Health Care book from the book section at www.ratfanclub.org
Excellent reference and inexpensive. It is updated yearly and usually has drug dose ranges as well as higher end level doses.

Thanks SQ, I got an excel worksheet from Lilspaz!

I have both that site bookmarked and the book!

I just needed help with how to work things out, which I have now :D
