Once she's up, she's usually fine, and I can even put her on her back. I can't touch her or anything without her protest squeaking and running away. Is it because I always grabbed her (usually nice unless I have to get her out and she keeps escaping, she's houdini I say) and didn't let her come out herself? When she's out of the cage, it's the same, except if she's sleeping in my sweater I can gently stroke her with no issue. I've just come to accept that it's her personality now, so not a big deal, but it's sorta a pain to keep chasing her around to pick her up if i have to clean the cage, and she wont come out by herself. I leave the cage door open when im making breakfast or similar, and she sits there nicely unlike cleo.

Most rats learn to tolerate but they will never like being grabbed. It's in their instinct that being grabbed = Predator.

I have to take my boys out daily so I can spot clean their cage whilst they are having their floor time too, and sometimes they just do not have the mood and give me the dirty face when I grab them out.

Snickers and Grumpy are like that and will even stand up in their boxing stances, but they are getting better. I usually have to say "Mommy is picking you up now" and scoop them up in two hands and then offer a yoogie or another treat either when they are in my hands or when I put them back.

I've got a few like that, they prefer to do things on their own terms. They will climb me but if I grab them, you'd think I was about to eat them alive or something. lol
But there are some rats who do enjoy being picked up. I've got a few of those too. I love each unique personalities. Makes them that more special.

Cleo doesn't hate it, but Violet protests, lol. I get a GO AWAY DONT PICK ME UP squeak, and she bolts, its probably comical to others, my hand running after her trying to pick her up. She never really has been one i can pick up...

@Rilence I never usually grab, usually I try to pick her up by her belly/side, and then once i get to the door of the cage I use both hands to hold all of her (theres a lot of her lol). I end up grabbing her sometimes because she just. wont. come. out.

Glad im not the only one with a dont touch me rattie girl ! I love this forum <3

I have some like that too. The two first rats that I ever got are so good with being picked up. I can grab them any way and they are fine, but they had more socialization than any of my others because it was just them and I got them at 6 weeks. At least I THINK that's why they are so good about it. Then I have some on the complete opposite end of the spectrum that freak out when I try and pick them up unless I do a perfect scoop. I have to chase a few around their cages. Others may find it funny, me, not so much. :giggle:

Haha, yeah ive had some who don't care, but most protest in some way or another. I agree with you on chasing them around being funny to others, i think i said something similar, ha ha!

none of my boys really like being picked up either. once I have them on my shoulder they're fine. they all hate it when I hold them out in front of me in both of my hands, so that I can see them and make kissing noises at them and so forth. does anyone else's ratties hate that just as much? they are all struggle to get away, but they're just so darn cute! I just want to kiss them and kiss them!

all of my friends and family think the rats are horribly disgusting. none of them want to touch them, some of them don't even want to look at them.

Yeh, I do have some of my rats like that. They just want to take their own sweet time to groom themselves well before they are willing to step up for me to bring them to their floor time area!

Some rats just don't like to be held. I"ve had many who were that way, especially younger rats. Many of my younger rats who were like that changed when they got older. They came to really tolerate it well.

all of my rats are still quite young, so maybe once they get older they will like being held more. keeping my fingers crossed!
