So our new little guy has been here a week now and he's been sneezing since we brought him home. I was figuring new home sneezes, but after a week he's starting to make a chirping sound when he sneezes. Loki was sneezing, but has since stopped.

Do we see a vet? What would be the best medication for a baby of 8weeks? I like to go prepared with options, not just rely on the vets words.

Are they wet sneezes? Has it increased since you changed the bedding out? If memory serves me doxy would be good for babies there is alot of debate on using Baytril for young rats. Is there excessive amounts of porphyin?

No porphyin, and I don't believe the sneezes are wet but I could be wrong. Any time I have been close enough to get sprayed, I haven't felt any wetness. These guys are so skiddish.

Sneezes don't worry me with newbies, its the gusto in which he chirps when he does sneeze that had me thinking. I do have extra doxy, but would like to avoid meds if he really doesn't need them for future sake. Would a combo need to be used such as doxy/zytho or would just one be sufficient?

We are using shredded paper at the moment, as we had an Aspen issue (these boys didn't get the Aspen though). His brother has stopped sneezing, but he hasn't.

It's a hard call. I think I would wait a wee bit longer. But the doxy might be something to try. How's the humidity in your home, is it very dry? If so, keep a bowl of water near the cage and see if that helps.

It's actually pretty good, we have oil hot water heat, and I dry cloth diapers indoors so where is moisture in the air... that and the water bowls never seem to stay full for long lol I will add another bowl of water near their cage though.

I am thinking maybe a wait, 1 more week while I watch him to see if it gets any better, then we'll be heading to the vet if its not.

Next Christmas, I'm asking for bottles of doxy :laugh4:

Doxycycline as well as baytril is one of those meds that should be avoided during pregancy, nursing and wee babies. Its not pediatric friendly.

For a young one with a mild URI I would use zithromax or amoxicillin, BUT if it worsens then put them on the Big Boy meds and don't worry about the supposed side effects.

Thank You! I knew there was some that were good and not good for babies. Hopefully should I need it, my vet will listen this time.

Why can't I remember that doxy is not good also. :gaah:

With young rats I usually go straight for the Zithro but for me, they need to really be sick. I wouldn't want to give Zithro for something like new home sneezes.
