I have an Exotic vet and she is fantastic. Not cheap by any means, but she knows her stuff.
I have no idea what the guy is like, but the female, has done work for me that I never thought was possible. I have just rescued 7 mice that are full to the top with mites. No fur at all. They are currently in treatment once a week, but they are feeling so much better, the fur is starting to regrow and they are biting with every scruff of the neck. One of my little ratties Jade (god bless her) was given a life span of 6 months due to her severe internal and external deformities. This women helped me to give Jade a full and happy 27 month life. What more could anyone ask for. I trust her judgement and feel she does such a great job, cause she truly LOVES her animals. It's more than just her job!

What is the cost for a visit there? Is she comfortable doing spays, neuters, tumour removals etc on rats?

She charges according to the number of pets, types of pets and reason for the visit.
First things first. Yes, she is not only comfortable doing procedures of ALL KINDS, she has all the proper equipment to perform these procedures effectively. For me personally she has done several x-rays and ultrasounds on my ratties. She has removed tumors from several of my ratties along with one of my gerbils. I enquired about a neuter for Hershey. She does question spays and neuters but will take the time (and lots of it) to ask WHY? Then she will advise you as to her feelings. I wanted to put Hershey in with my 2 females so he wouldn't have to be alone. She agreed but once the results from the xrays came back, it was out of the question. (He had permanent lung damage) She would not risk Hershey nor would she risk my 2 females at their age in order to add one more. So to answer your question, yes she will consider, if she feels it is in the best interest of the animal, and if it is not, she will not hesitate to tell you NO with a detailed explanation as to why. I am going to dig up my old invoices, so I can give you actual prices.

Nov 17/08-Very High Risk Mammary tumour removal from rat. Tumour was the size of a baseball. Exam $47 Induction $115 Tumour removal $125. 4-2mg/ml doses of Meloxicam was complimentary.
Dec 10/08 - 30day supply of Baytril (enrofloxacin) for Jade 7.5 ml oral suspension 0.15cc twice daily $40
Mar 11/09-Female rat Euthanasia for Opal. Opal was a very high strung rattie and I didnt want her last moments to be painful, so she put her in the incubator to put her to sleep before the needle. This incurred an additional cost $95. A straight euthanasia will be substantially less. The calming before the storm is more for my piece of mind....so I pay.

I just rescued 7 mice that are full beyond belief with scarcoptic mange. Anyone that has gone through this will know, it is a long and painstaking situation. This is a breakdown of charges for 7 mice.
May 13/09-Exam $79 Skin scrape & Microscopic Exam $52 Ivermectin Injection $55.50, subsequent oral Ivermectin treatments $55.50. These prices are for all 7 Mice. There will be 6 treatments and then they will be re-assessed.
Keep in mind, EVERYTHING I rescue is SICK. So my charges maybe higher than average simply because of the volume of problems and animals I have per visit.
If you have any other question, let me know.
I hope this helps you. She really is THE BEST!! :D

Thanks for all the info! There are no vets in Markham that I trust for anything more than euths.

No good exotic vets here either. Newmarket is not exactly in our backyards but fire straight up the 404. You wont be sorry :)

Hi I know this is an old thread... But if this exoitc vet is still around and open for new clients, can someone please share their contact info? My daughter has a less than one year old rat and recently we feel a small lump on his belly... Thanks.
