I recently adopted 3 boys from a breeder who claims so be going out of business. 2 of the 3 boys have very very yellow discoloration to their fur. I've seen some minor yellowing before but not like this... anything I should be doing? Thanks Much!

Where is the yellow fur? If it's on the hind end back area that's normal it's buck grease. Or is it somewhere else.

I'm just wondering if this isn't the result of 10 med. sized males being stuck in a 10 gallon tank for god knows how long. Could it be urine stains? My husband picked up the rats and said even though there were many in the same tank, everything was super clean. She knew he was coming though so who knows what their typical cage conditions were. We plan on going back to take more...the thought of them being like that just makes me very sad. I just need to make some more cages. I convert 55 gallon totes with hardware cloth... I cut out the lids and sides and replace with the mesh. They have always worked well.

Oh my... yes I agree urine stains. Those poor boys.
Dominant males will often mark on the sides of the other boys.

I'm pretty sure this is the case here. Should I try and give them a bath? I've only had them a few days and I don't want to stress them out even more. They do not smell at all though. However I don't think i've EVER been peed on so much by rats in my life! :giggle:

It does sound like urine stains.

I wouldn't bath them yet. If they are now living in clean conditions some of it will be cleaned off when they clean and the rest may fade over time. Give them a couple more days and if they are still yellow then consider wiping them over with a damp cloth or a bath.

I think you're right. I let them out for a romp on the bed tonight and already the stains seem to be better.

Thats awesome :happydance:

The poor babies must have been living in a very dirty cage. I have only seen really bad staining on rats that have been living in crowded or unclean environments.
Bet they are feeling much better too
