Well it's been quite some time since I've updated on Stewart, mostly in fear of something going wrong after bragging things are going good! As some of you may remember, a few weeks ago we took Stewart in for some signs of URI, the vet didn't hold much hope for him as it was much worse than we thought. The next 2 weeks were up-all-nighters, watching him in his cage for moments where he would panic, not being able to breathe. The first week he had these episodes about 4-6 times a night, the second week was about 3 times a night. I'm telling you, the nebulizer got its monies worth out of it, although I am sure I lost about 7 years on my heart. There were many nights I really thought we would have to take him in for the final trip, but those were always the nights before a day where the vet was closed. I kept holding hope that he would pull through this.

Flash forwards to today, he's still with us, still making noises but there have been no gasping fits or reasons to break out the nebulizer or use the puffer in over a week. We still have a long road of recovery left but I am happy to say, he is still improving. He has lost a bit of weight through it all, but that's to be expected. He is eating fine, and drinking well. Extra baby food, baby cereal and ensure for the boys. I see him at the bottle more than the others but that is also to be expected with the Lasix. We are taking him again in a few days to have him looked at to check for any heart issues. We have been able to drop the Lasix from 2Xday to only once and he continues to improve. The other day I noticed he is less of a constant squeeking, and more of a low gurgle. Sounds to me that the infection is breaking up like a chest infection in a human would. When it breaks up, you know you've turned the corner. My vet said weeks ago, that he was so filled with congestion that he had 5% oxygen :( My little Stewart hid it so well.

So, we're still recovering and this is where we stand now with Stewart. He's such a strong little boy, and every day with him is a blessing.

I'm glad to hear it. I hope he continues to improve and I look forward to hearing about your visit with the vet.
That's shocking about the 5% oxygen! Poor little guy, he really is very brave isn't he?
:hugs:

Yes, when I said he was gasping for air, he really was and had little to no oxygen. Blue mouth, feet, and cold tail :( The first few times, he was lifeless. We've been working our tails off around the clock to make sure he got the help to get as much oxygen as possible until the meds started working, as everyone knows oxygen is needed for the body to heal (and live for that matter!). At first I would have given him a 9/10 for severeness, now I would say he's about 5/10... and continuing to get better slowly. Not out of the woods yet, as I know they can go downhill quick with such an infection, but really happy all our hard work to help him is really starting to work.

I'm picking up our Doxy on Weds, thankfully Ratty Momma gave us enough supply for Stewart until we could get the Rx for doxy. Her along with Maple's help, Stewart wouldn't be here!

And we took Sammy back in Saturday for a recheck, his mild URI looks to be gone but the vet has decided to place him on doxy/baytril for another 4 weeks just to be sure so this doesn't happen to him as well. I agree with her, better to be safe rather than just mark him cured! Sammy was only on baytril for 2 weeks, and after much reading on here, I feel better knowing he will be treated for longer.

AND Ash, new boy, isn't sneezing nearly as much as he was! There seems to be a silver lining after all the stress of the holidays!
