As many of you may know, a number of weeks ago my girls went to the vet for their URIs. They are coming up to the end of their 6 week medication period.

Emma had a lump develop on her throat but it hasn't gotten any bigger, and isn't bothering her. But that's not really what this post is about.

Emma's breathing has improved a millionfold. I've heard nary a sneeze, rattle or chortle.

Maggie... Maggie comes and goes. Today and Yesterday have been "bad" days. She physically rocks when she's breathing hard. When she gets excited and is running around you wouldn't know she's having a problem. But when she's relaxing she looks laboured in her breathing. She's not freaking out or gasping... which is good, obviously. But I'm worried. She seemed like she had made a complete turn around at one point, but she's gotten bad again. And some days are better than others.

They've been on Baytril/Doxy for almost 6 weeks. Since I'm going to have to change vets, and I don't know how rat savvy this next one I've been recommended is, what sort of direction should I point this vet in? I have been reading about zithromax (sp?) in some threads.. the wonder drug?

Any other ideas about what I can do for her? I really don't think it's environmental at all, since Emma is so good right now. It almost seems like their rolls as a pair has changed... Emma is now the spunky extrovert and Maggie has become the quiet one.

Poor sweetie...
That's how I approach my vet, I tell her that I've been reading in a number of places that such and such seem to work wonders on URIs. But I recommend you doing the combo with Baytril.

Yeah definitely mention zithromax along with the baytril. It can work wonders. I have had a few rats that were like that when they were older. They would rock as the laboured for breath. I ended up using a steroid (plus ab) for reducing the inflammation in those lungs. It really helped as a palliative treatment. :)
