I'm freaking out a bit right now, as two of my girls are getting spayed tomorrow. George and Addie (the bossy terror girls) will be going in the morning to Amherst Veterinary Hospital to be spayed. I feel confident it should all go well, as their pre-spay exam went well and they both have been very healthy. I can't help but keep thinking "what if".. because there are still risks with any animal, especially small ones with anesthesia.

So.. I'll probably be asking a lot of questions for after-care the next week :) I've never been through a surgery before with rats, so it is quite scary for both me and the two girls.

Wish us luck and a speedy recovery! I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight, will be worrying too much!

Where is this clinic? Are the vets nice? I'm assuming that they are knowledgeable as you use them... I don't know how much longer I can go without a vet that I can trust.

I've seen Dr. Luckwadlt many times and he has done a few surgeries for me and I always felt my rats were in great hands with him. That is who is doing the surgery, right? I haven't been there in a long time and I don't know if they have other vets now that might be doing it.
I really like Dr. Luckwadlt and he is very rat knowlegdable and an excellent surgeon. He has done much more complicated surgeries for me than spays and neuters.
I would definitely feel confident if he were treating or operating on my rats. There are always risks, but he is one of the better rat vets out there.

Now the scared waiting starts! I had to leave my house at 5:45 AM and the trip takes about 2 hours one way. So I got there about 7:45 and dropped them off with their carrier, fleece, bottle and HT blocks. They weighed them again, and the poor girls were not happy. Not only do they have a 2 hour trip by transit, they get put on a metal table with strangers in a new place. They were really squirmy, but I can't blame them. I miss them already :( I'll know by 1 how it went, but until then I'll be nervously waiting.

The staff are very friendly, and I do feel they will be treated with the upmost care. I really hope it goes smoothly. I'm not worried about the spays, as they are routine (and pretty much the same for most species), but its the anesthesia that worries me after reading some horror stories (bad me, i shouldn't have done that!)

I really can't wait to bring them home.

Now what to do for a few hours?

Anything that you cannot hurt yourself doing. Nothing too exacting or with sharp objects. Drawing maybe? Cleaning their cage and getting it ready for them to come home? A stupid computer game that takes just enough braincells?

Yay! I just called and the vet said it went very well :D No complications or anything, but they like to keep them overnight thtere. I feel so relieved though, I can't wait to get them home tomorrow :) Maybe I can rest easy now for the rest of the day, as I'm exhausted and running on no sleep.

Yeah, rest sounds excellent about now! I'm happy, as the vet said everything is good news. Worrying can be good, but it's just so draining! lol.

Now I hope those silly girls leave their incisions alone. The vet said that they stitch up the internal layers, and glue the outside one so that they really don't have anything to grab at. George and Addie are just so hyper all the time, I'm hoping they can contain themselves for a while

Aww Shelley, I sure feel for you! It's agonizing waiting to hold them again. My only spay was a long way away from me afterwards too, but better your girls are where they can get help if need be when the distance to take them back is so great.
You'll be able to stress happily/unhappily over them for a long time yet with them home and healing. So get some rest while you can!

Yay all went well! :happydance:

They are doing great! Thankyou for asking :) Dr Luckwaldt did an excellent job with their surgeries, and it cost less than I had thought it would (an added bonus!) I had been worrying so much, I'm so glad they are recovering well.

The girls really don't seem to realize anything has happened to them, they are bouncy and wrestling with each other like always  I took some photos of them tonight.

I think they look good, any opinions? My first time with any rat surgery, so I'm not sure what is ideal :)

And some face shots of the goofballs.

Yes, they are looking great. I'm surprised at how small their incisions are, I thought they would have been longer.
I'm glad they are recovering well.

Excellent work, nice and clean and small, that's how it should look like.
How are the girls doing? Any owie stretches? Are they eating good?
