So Tofu has a mega head tilt and congestion which I 've been treating with Doxy and Cipro.
It is helping the congestion but doing nothing to improve the head tilt.
Are the meds wrong or do I need Baytril?
5 of my ratties are on meds and my vet fund is nil.
I can afford the meds but not the vet visit.
Let me know if Baytril will do the trick.
Thanx. :cuddle:

Sadly inner ear infection (the head tilt is just a symptom of it) can be cured, but the tilt may stay or get only a little better. How long was Tofu on these abs before the tilt showed up?

Well I'm not quite sure, a week or two but he just started meds a week and a half ago.
I haven't been watching them as closely as usual. :emb:
I dunno how you manage with all your sick ratties.
I'm stressed with 5 sick. :gaah:

Just confirming...he started abs 1.5 weeks ago and just got the tilt now?

If so, not a good sign. :( I hate when rats get head tilt or UTI's etc when they are already on broad spectrum abs.

He could have had a tilt sooner but as I said, not watching them as closely as I should have.
Would Baytril help or should I just keep giving the Doxy and Cipro?
He's not acting sick at all and he's so sweet.

Sorry to hear this. I used to think that ear infections were easily fixed, because I was lucky with my first one, but my vet's experience is that they are an real challenge. Do you have an anti inflammatory?vets often give one with the abs. Trouble is that those drugs interfere with immune response, so you are in a bind.

Is Tofu old enough that the head tilt could be from PT?

No anti inflammatory.
Willow, his sister died of PT awhile ago.
He will be 2 at the end of November.
I hope that he doesn't have it tho. :(
Wylie his brother died months ago of a pulmonary abscess.
Bad genetics, poor babies. :sad3:

Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory. I think Godmother meant a steroid, but if he's had a tilt longer than a week, it's unlikely to help.

Baytril is a much more effective antibiotic than Cipro - that's why it's often used. Chlorpalm is also supposed to be effective with ear infections. If he's gotten worse while on antibiotics, he needs to see a vet ASAP.

Cash had an ear infection, got a head tilt tried pred on him for a few weeks and he still has a tilt.

I have an appointment to see Dr. Munn at 9:20 am tomorrow.
It's for Ellie who has a pulmonary abscess and tilty headed Tofu.
I will also bring along Kenny, Keewee and Poppet for morale support.
They aren't getting much better either. :gaah:
They are all from the same litter except for Mr. Kenneth.
NEVER again will I keep so many siblings.
The stress is making me grey.
I will let you know what he says.
Wish them luck because it doesn't look good for Miss Ellie. :(

Baytril + clavamox
or cloropalm are the two recommended treatments

and as others mentioned, an anti-inflamatory to reduce inflamation

My Miriam is presently on metronidazole as it is the only thing that helped her previous inner ear infections

All the best tomorrow

It looks like Tofu could be showing the signs of a pituitary tumor.
Dr. Munn said it could be an ear infection but given the genetics of the litter it's more likely a tumor. :gaah:
His sister Willow had one and passed not that long ago.
I was given baytril and theophylline for him, of course he hates it.
It's not a little tilt either and sometimes if he looks up too far he flips over.
He's such a sweet boy.
