A few months ago Toby had an abscess on his back which ended up sorting itself out. He's had a little lump there as a souvenir since, but I think it's got a bit bigger. Is this just pus which needs to come out? Should I do something or let it clear up by itself like it did last time?

Its probably recurring. The problem with abscesses on the back is they don't drain because of their location. You can try damp warm compresses to get the infection to the surface and burst, but after that you will need to flush the abscess (my preference is saline solution) at least twice a day to keep it clean, and so it can heal up properly and not come back. NO ointments as they encourage surface healing, and with abscesses you want it to heal from the inside upwards to the surface.
