It was ****oo (my dumbo himalayan male) visit to the vets today. For a few weeks he has had a consistant sneez, iv been itching to get him to the vets as im paranoyed over my ratties health as it is but i tryed a few herble treatments but to no avail (as it wasnt getting any worse i was debating what would be the right move)... as soon as a saw a little redness around his nose i called the vets and booked an apointment the vet was not worried at all just said it may be a little something developing so he gave my little man a shot of penicillin and said that it should clear up in the next few days.. my vet comes highly recomended and i do trust him. but i still find myself worried and abit restless. I hope im not being too paranoid?

****oo's reaction to it all was layed back as always except when the vet wanted to take him from me he clinged to my jumped then as soon as i got him back he climed onto my shoulder. While in the waiting room he had a good old moan for all too hear hehe :)

One shot of penicillin will not clear anything, and penicillin is not usually given for URIs. Oral meds are best for URIs, and your vet should give you a doxy/baytril combo.

One of my girls was injected with penicillin every 3 days and it really did help her chronic URI. Not something I've really used since, but it helped her, and no other medicines did.

Also but if this is his first respiratory you might want to consider a steroid injection and the Baytril, he may respond fine to that.

Penicillin will not help with mycoplasma as it works by preventing cells from repairing or building cell walls. Mycoplasma is unusual for bacteria, as it does not have a cell wall, instead only a lipid membrane. Penicillin will help clear up any other bacteria that may be causing the URI.

I would be more comfortable using an antibiotic such as Baytril, as it works my stopping the enzymes used for DNA replication and repair. It is effective against a broad range of bacteria, including mycoplasma.

As I said ONE shot won't work...nothing was mentioned about getting anymore. However, if more injections are to follow then it's a different story.

To be honest im in no place to tell the vets whats what. wether it be the right desision or not iv desided to listen to what he tells me, im giving it a few days then if there is no improvement i will of cours bring him back.

Your little guy might not have any respiratory illnesss and is just a sneezy kind of guy which is why the one time penicillin shot and not a "real" drug regime.
Listening to your vet is absolutely the right thing to do. But be sure to stay on top of it and return if need be. Some vets aren't experienced with exotics and will learn with time. It's not unheard of to bring in suggestions so he can then research it in the exotic formularies if he has any. If not there are resources for vets online.

What you can do is if it comes back then go back to your vets and say that you've heard that Baytril and/or doxy is really effective for a URI. That's what I did with my vet. It's very hard to speak up to the vet, and I understand that completely.

Well i have good news, his sneezing has completely stopped (so far) wich i guess is good! Thanks for your guys input! If his sneezing comes back i will defo do what youv said. Iv recently been refured to an exotic vet though amd i think i will be using him instead as he will know alot more about my guys! :) xx
