I recently lost one of my two rats. The remaining rat (Frida) is a female, 1 year and 10 months old, and I don't want her to be alone. But I don't want baby rats, as I'm not planning to have any more rats after Frida, at least not for a while.

I've talked to some of the members on the Norwegian rat forum and there is a woman living close to me with several adult rats, and she's willing to help me out and actually lend me a rat! Very kind of her. Problem is, she's only got males.

Frida got a Suprelorin implant 8 motnhs ago. Do you think it's a good idea to try to put her together with a male?

It should be fine! Male and female intros are usually pretty easy and the implant makes her sterile, so there's no risk of pregnancy. I'm sure Frida will be happy with a new buddy.

I would double check with the vet to see how long the implant is effective. If it's only a year, then she will need a new implant soon. You definitely do NOT want a rat pregnant at that age!

I checked with mine recently and they are saying it's effective between 18 months to 3 years... some of it depends on the individual, but they think 18 months is the minimum. I had a female that had the implant for over a year with an intact male for a while (he's also implanted now) and I had no issues.

Good point. I'm going to the vet today to deliver Radka for the autopsy, so I'll ask her about that.
