Hi everyone,

I felt like I should tell you all how my rat's health has improved with the use of supplements.

My rat is older now and he wasn't walking very well. I was worried he was going to die really soon. He seemed to be suffering.

I was already giving him shark cartilage and coriolus mushroom everyday. Then I decided to start giving him Glucosamine and suddenly after like 2 days he started walking and moving fast again! Then I decided to get the Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplement cause I heard chondroitin works good in combination with glucosamine. Now he seems to have more mobility than before. I couldn't believe how much he improved.

So here is the list of stuff I gave him (small amounts; 1/4 tablet or less per day):

1. Glucosamine and Chondroitin: for joints (small amount everyday). I read that someone used a 1/4 of a tablet (http://en.allexperts.com/q/Pet-Rats-353 ... roitin.htm).
2. Shark Cartilage: for joints (everyday).

3. Coriolos mushroom: to prevent tumors and improve immune system. He hasn't gotten a tumor and he's 2.5 years old. Even though he's a white rat.
4. Echinacea: 1 drop per day to boost immune system (I read somewhere you're supposed to do for one week and then off for two weeks).

5. Multivitamin drops: 3 drops per day because young or old rats need more nutrition.
6. Omega-3: 2 drops per day. I poke a hole with a pin and squeeze 2 drops in.

For 1,2 and 3: I took one whole pill for each and emptied it out into a small plastic container with a lid.

I crushed any pills with a mortar thing until it was a fine powder and mixed it all up.

I mix it all into 2 teaspoons of baby pablum (baby food) in a small bowl. If you don't have baby pablum, try oatmeal instead.

Then I add the drops of echinacea, multivitamin drops, and omega-3. And then I stir all the ingredients together with warm filtered water until it's a pasty consistency (like tomato sauce or thicker).

Then I feed it to him every evening.

I am very careful not to give him too much. When I mix all the powder supplements together, I tap in about a dime size amount (and flat) into a small bowl. I read that the coriolus mushroom and shark cartilage cannot really be overdosed since it is more like a food than a supplement. The omega-3 is safe too.

The multivitamin drops, echinacea and the glucosamine/chondroitin are what I'm careful about.

He is healthy and happy now, I can tell. He is kind of old but he's healthy for his age.

shark cartilage?! wt...o_O

Shark cartilage is supposed to be good for joint issues and I think I read a long time ago it may keep tumor in check in conjunction with co-enzyme Q-10. A lot of health food stores no longer carry shark cartilage though, because there is fear that the sharks are killed just for their cartilage and the rest thrown back into the ocean. Not everyone even considers that when they buy the bottle at the local pharmacy.

I'm glad your boy is doing better Dan, what type of Echinacea are you using and how much was it? I keep on meaning to buy some for my kids. I know they sell them at Walmart but I hate giving them my money so I'm wondering what prices are like elsewhere.

Once a upon a time I did try the mycoplex and shark cartilage, I was desperate and the rats were popping up with tumours. At that time, people were saying that spaying does not prevent tumours. I never tried it with Q-10 but the mycoplex and shark cartilage didn't help at all with the growth. Thank god we talked to our vet and she told us that spaying can help. The rest is history.

I believe that any supplement that boosts the immune system is a good thing.

I looked into it while waiting to bring my first rat in for a lump removal at 8 months old. (Thinking back, I had no idea then how early that was for a lump.) I didn't end up giving it though, because the clerk at the health food store explained why they didn't carry shark cartilage and I had no idea how much to give.

I do give supplements to boost the immune system and right now I'm giving an EPA (type of omega-3) supplement to maybe help with anxiety/aggression in one of my girls.

Yeah, I was thinking about that today. I looked at the ingredients on the bottle of shark cartilage today to see what sharks it came from. I can understand the concern of those who worry about the impact these products have on shark populations relating to how the actual cartilage is obtained.

At the time, I wasn't thinking about it. I was just desperate to help my poor rat with his tumor. I ended up having the tumor removed by a vet because it seemed absolutely necessary. Plus I heard that the sooner a tumor is removed, the better.

I have a feeling that the glucosamine/chondroitin works better for joints than the shark cartilage anyway because after I started giving it to him, I saw a dramatic improvement.

I have a few pics here on my blog: http://qscdfg678.blogspot.com/

I get that... I wouldn't have thought about it at the time if the clerk hadn't told me either. You're trying to help your ratty. Is his upset stomach getting better?

That was exactly my thinking at the time as well.
