Hi, I'm sorry if this is posted in the wrong section, I'm still new here and now I'm all panicked!

Okay so my Rat, Reid who is about 3 months old, was fine when I last checked 2 hours ago, then about 20minutes ago I walked past and he had drool down his front and seemed lethargic, I immediately put him in my 'sick' cage and I've been watching him ever since.

It seems like he's got something stuck down his throat, he looks like he's 'retching' and has brown drool around his mouth but he's just sitting in the corner, he occasionally cleaned himself but he is nothing like his normal crazy self.
He isn't puffed up nor does he have any discharge from his eyes or nose but it just seems odd that he became lethargic so quickly if it is choking but I have no experience with choking Rats so I don't know what they do/how they act so I have no idea what to do right now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I feel very silly now, because as soon as I posted this, he perked up, drank some water and is now trying to get out of the cage so I think he was lethargic because something was stuck in his throat and now he's swallowed whatever it was and is now feeling better.
Really apologise for making a pointless thread, I was just so worried it was something more sinister!

There is no reason to apoligize. There has been many people who have many times paniced due to a situation that they are not familiar with. I am just glad things have worked out. If you have any more problems please feel free to post on the forum. YOu will get some answer.

With the drooling and the age I would lean towards choking before i would stroke or anything else. Was it colored? Generally they will drool to dislodge what ever is stuck.

Glad he is doing better!

I'm glad he's feeling better, it does sound like he was choking to me. Most of the time you leave them alone and they work it out themselves.

I agree, it was choking. Next time it happens, best to let them work it out by themselves. Sometimes it can take a few hours for rats to work through a choking.
