Yesterday my boy Yani died and I think there were a couple things leading up to it that may have been a cause of his death, I was just wondering your opinion on what happened.

Starting yesterday afternoon I noticed he and his bother(Kale) had squinty eyes.. it has been getting warmer in our apt during the evening about 80* and I figured the younger boys were just not use to the heat yet(my other kids were fine, active.) and I dismissed it. Around 9pm I had the kids out for a playtime while I was in the other room when I came back I saw everyone on-top of the cage (and Brownie on the bed) but didn't see Yani, so I dug him out of the hammock for snuggles. He stayed with me a bit and seemed calmer then usual about being picked up in the air. Then he went with Brownie by the cage and I scooped out a bowl of food and picked out a cheerio for everyone. I handed them out and by the time everyone else was looking for more, Yani just dropped his like he couldn't eat it after trying. Soon after, it was cage time so collected everyone and went to get some dehydrated peas to hand out. I'm not sure if Yani ate his but I set them infront of him. Yani was just in his hammock staring out at me with the squinty eyes. I gave him pats and he didn't move I leaned in and heard a weeze to his breath so I wanted to offer some Benadryl for the night. I got .2ml in a syrigne but he would only take a couple licks. I wanted to offer it on a spoon instead so left and when I came back he was out of the hammie. I got him and offered the spoon he turned away again so I got him out to offer w/o him turning away but didn't get very close with it. He started hacking like something was in his throat. He started thrashing and jumped in the cage. I picked him back out in my hands to try to rub whatever down his throat. It didn't help and I quickly tried a hemlich push while turning him upsidedown but his head went limp. I think he had passed out I layed him out and tried cpr compressions while I got a 1ml syringe and got it down his mouth to give air... Honestly I'm not sure if he was passed out or dead at this point. I didn't feel I could do anymore after 5-6 pushes of the syringe so I stopped and he still looked alive like his eyes were still open just he was limp. I held him several more minutes as I was in shock and he felt alive in my arms. When I saw his eyes had glazed over it became more real, but I'm still like what the hell happened? Because he was fine, just a light weeze then violent thrashing looking like he couldn't suck in air and then nothing.

I have no idea what could have happened, just wanted to say I am so so sorry. I went through this 2 days ago with my boy G'Kar :( Sorry for your loss hun.

Oh dear. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I first would have thought choking, but if the squinty eyes were linked to what happened, and his brother was squinty too, I would not think choking. But I have no clue. Is his brother still behaving normally?

Again, I am very sorry. You did everything possible for him.

I just changed their hammocks and they were pretty hairy from sheding... maybe a hair caught in throat feeling and then panicing about not breathing right and me freaking scared him to death or he passed out from lack of air and I couldn't get air quick enough either.
Thank you all for the condulences.
Kale is bright eyed today. I think they were worn out from heat yesterday and its just 71* now. Their water bottles are/have been working fine.

Is it possable to be allergic to benadryl?

I found it is possable to be allergic to benadryl! I'm positive that's what happened now because he got uncomfotable right after exposure. most likely an isolated problem with him but I won't ever offer any to Kale just in case.

I'm sorry you lost your boy so suddenly. It would be very strange to lose someone to Benadryl as it is an antihistamine, and would be the first thing I would give someone if they were having an allergic reaction. It's scary to lose a rattie to an unknown cause. How can we protect our babies if we don't know what happened?
