If it's not one rat, it's another! :emb:

So Friday night it was out time while I cleaned the cage, and I noticed Ed was a little off. Half-way through out time, he started walking like he was hunched? Like his hind legs were beginning to shuffle. Then I noticed that whenever another rat approached him, he would scream. Ed is normally a bit of a skittish guy and protests aren't completely unusual, but protesting because another rat was sniffing at him or trying to play was unusual.

Next morning, he seemed okay. He ate his meds, greeted me at the door, all was well. Today, he is acting peculiar again -- He's back to shuffled walking, when Roy joins him to cuddle or jump on him, he screamed loudly in protest and spent nearly 85% of out time cuddled up on top of a pile of fleece in my nightstand.

But I shake the treat jar, or offer food, and he comes running like suddenly nothing is wrong.

But back in the cage after out time, he seemed to have difficulty getting up the stairs with usual 'hop' and 'hurry'. When I offered them another treat, he seemed to run to the stairs, pause, and then run back to me(It's a CN, he was on the shelf) like he'd debated going down stairs, but it wasn't worth the effort. When trying to get into a hammock, he reached up, grabbed the edge of it, tried to climb into it and slipped and stumbled a bit but managed to get in on the second try.

When he eats his treats, though, he holds them with one hand while keeping his other paw on the ground. :sad3: (But he takes the treat from me with his mouth, very very delicately).

He's about 17 months old, but could be older since that's just an estimate since he was from Kijiji and I was told he was 3 months when I got him. They didnt specify if it was three months since they got him, or what -- I never thought to ask at the time. :( He also has a URI right now, so his eyes are a little red, but not really any poryphrin on them. However, one eye is starting to get a little redder than the other and that's also the side he usually holds food with.

I have a couple pictures of how he holds his treats(and his eye), plus a video from Friday night of him walking(But it sort of sucks, you cant really tell in the video...).

I wonder if he could have some sort of pain in his tummy or bladder infection? I'd bring him to the vet.

Hmm, I never thought of that, but would the baytril and doxy he's on now not take care of a bladder infection?

I wonder if metacam is worth contemplating if its pain, until I can call a vet tomorrow and get him In.

When it's something like that, I'd rather not recommend metacam. We just don't know what it could be. You would think the baytril would cover the bladder infection but it doesn't always. He may need something like Clavamox for that.

Ahh, I see, makes sense. It's strange, it seems so on/off.

Could a penis plug do it?

Not sure... have you checked?

I tried on Friday but he was stuggling too much... I'm not really experienced with the penis plug area, LOL.

I guess HED wouldn't do anything either; he's probably too young. If it's no a penis plug I guess it must be something with his abdomen.

Easiest way to check for a penis plug is to set him in your lap between your thighs on his back and place 2 fingers on either side of his penis then push in.

You can also try feeling around in his abdomen to see if anything feels "off" but if it isn't a penis plug then seeing a vet would be my suggestion.

I tried that, on each of my rats, actually -- I cant get the penis out on any of them to check.

i will be taking him to a vet, I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas. I really don't like going into the vets knowing nothing.

If you go to Dr. Munn, he'll know what to look for and what to do with your description.

Yeah... I just never know if it'll be him I see; I usually ask, but sometimes they still put me with the other vet. :gaah: Luckily it's mostly been URI's.

I suppose if he can urinate it's not a penis plug? He did pee, but he seemed really sluggish and ended up with the hiccups(or what looked like... can rats get hiccups?) halfway through. I have a light gold fleece down and it didn't look like he had blood in his urine.

He's got me stumped, but he's got a vet appointment soon, so hopefully all'll be well. :(

Rats can still pee with plugs. Most plugs are not painful and do not stop urination. But they can be bothersome to the rat. And if it stays in too long or builds up too much, that I believe is when it can become infected or with other factors like bacteria. It's too bad we don't have more real info on plugs.

It had stopped again yesterday but I took him in today and other than his eyes still being red, he couldnt find anything wrong no matter how much he prodded. He checked for penis plug and found nothing, etc, he just can't figure out why his eyes are red.

Bizarre, but I'm glad it was nothing. The tech at the clinic was joking, saying Ed and Roy are always doing this to me LOL 'pretending' to be sick.

His eyes are red because of porphyrin. He must at one point had a lot of porphyrin and in some rats it can "burn" the surrounding healthy tissues. My sister had a rat with one red eye. It can also burn away the hair/fur around the eye permanently.
That would be my guess with your red eyed dude.
