My one ratter Sprocket decided to take a flailing leap off of his cage and fall 4ish feet down knocking his teeth loose on the way. The first night he seemed normal (besides spraying his polyporphyrin everywhere) but we soon noticed he couldn't eat. Thus, we started to worry. We attempted to check his teeth in which he threw a fit, but we ended up seeing a that one of his front top teeth was badly cracked and crooked. The rest of the night was spent with him bruxing like a crazy mofo (even in his sleep). We took him to the vet to ***** the damage. They ended up taking him to the back of the place (and what I think involved strapping the little boy down) a few minutes later, the vet came in with a perplexed look on his face. "um...both of his front teeth are gone."

Anyway...has anyone else had this happen? The vet is assured that they will grow back, but I have read if they are damaged up to the root, that they might not come back. If you've had this happen...what was the outcome? And if they did grow back, how long did it take. It's a little to late for him to wish for his two front teeth for Christmas :(

Poor little guy...but this happens and their teeth usually always grow back. They may not grow back straight and may require constant trimming or they might be perfectly normal. It won't take long before you will know... teeth grow very fast.

poor guy :( is he eating mushed food for now?

I took his block to a cheese grater and made a powder out of it and add water into it to make a 'mush' substance. He's also been eating soggy cheerios and mashed bananas. He's lost a little bit of weight, but that's to be expected. But today he was able to chew the 'flowers' off of some broccoli and a few non-soggy cheerios which is a great step forward.

That's great that it's growing back. He'll adjust.

I had a rat that my vet would constantly trim his teeth to the gum line because they grew much too fast and had pretty bad malocclusion.

I forgot to update! His teeth fully grew back and I believe they're even straighter than before. He's back to his old shananigans! When he wants to come out of the cage he puts his little hands on the bars and chews like a mad-man. We were so nervous we'd never see him do that again (we crack up everytime we see him do it) and it's our favorite time of the day when Sprocket gets super excited to come out. :) Thanks for all the advice through the dilemma!
