Spot was rescued from being a feeder as a young rat. I felt sorry for her because she had a bad (degloving?) injury to the bottom part of her tail, and she looked really scared. And wired. Let's say... Spot is no longer scared, in fact today she is quite the opposite, but...she is very much wired. After having her a couple days, she bit her own tail off (yuk, I know. It wasn't a very big part of her tail, and I had a vet appointment scheduled for the following week, but she took care of things herself) After that, she was very depressed. She always wanted to be alone. Slowly but surely she became more friendly and curious, and loved to run around the apartment. Spot even chases the cat. The cat is absolutely terrified of her. I don't let her do it anymore because I'm afraid he may bite her some day out of frustration, but he's declawed, so at first I wasn't instantly freaking about her cat chasing. Poor old Oliver (cat) would hide tucked away in a corner of the room, and Spot would run run run over to him and sniff him and climb on him (she also tends to bite things she doesn't know what it is. She's never aggressive or never even tried to bite me, but say, if she doesn't understand it's my finger wiggiling on the other side of a shirt, CHOMP), and he would run away fast as he could. Then we see this crazy half tailed rat running like a lightning bolt after him as if to say, "wait, come back here! I wanna play! who are you!" Spot is also the queen of escapes and adventures, but she's pretty good about coming to me when I call her name three times fast.
Spot had a vaginal infection when she was maybe 6-8months old. It was a white thick discharge for which she was given baytril. It cleared it up, but maybe 4 months later, it came back with a vengeance: my precious sweet Spot had pyometra. We had her spayed immediately, and also removed a mammary tumor she had growing in the same area. The vet said we'd caught it just in time, whew! During her recovery, I made her a bed inside a large cat carrier and fixed a water bottle and food bowl to the door for her. I kept her beside me on the bed, where I normally sit working on the computer and watching TV most the day. I kept the door open most of the time, so she spent her recovery playing on the bed and keeping me company, she loved it! Spot is the best. I am afraid the pyometra was caused by myco, which unfortunately after her surgery, has somehow been exposed to her lungs, so she now has a minor cough but no congestion really. Gonna have it checked up next week, but it's not very bad.
Spot is precious as she could be. My husband and I were so happy to see her change from a rat who didn't want the company of any other rats or people to being queen of the rat pack, and a total lover girl. She gets so excited when we take her out to run on the bed and play in the blankets. She loves to watch out the window and get fresh air. She also gives the nicest kisses and has a fantastic sense of humor. She likes to take my things and hide them, hoard them. When she was living in the box on the bed with me, she would take all my stuff and hide it in her box, and I would quietly remove it while she slept or explored elsewhere. Really a treasure trove, anything shiny or smelly or, well, just anything really!
Her name is Spot, but sometimes it is Sweet Spot, or Dirty Spot, Naughty Spot...
Also! Spot LOVES it when you sweet talk her. When she's laying down relaxing in her house, and she gives you the "bedroom eyes", you can start petting her very gently and very sweetly, behind her ears and on the top of her head, and a little bit down her back too. While I'm doing this I tell her how wonderful, smart, sweet, ect ect ect. She LOVES positive affirmations that way. And she will start eye boggling like crazy. I have a good video but I apologize that I (facepalm) turned the camera partway thru. Turn your sound up and watch my precious baby girl! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9OzXTKrGro
