Penelope was spayed on Wednesday. When I took her home I checked her incision and she had chewed out the sutures already, so I took her back. We elected to try tissue glue so she wouldn't need to be under anaesthetic again. That was OK yesterday, and now it has opened up again when I checked just now.
Her incision is approx a cm in length. Two questions:
Do I get her re-sutured again or leave the incision to heal as she is not leaving it alone? (She has evidence of barbering on her forearms.)
Do I put her on a prophylactic course of antibiotics?

I think Shelagh usually recommends giving Metacam so they don't have any pain and leaves the incision alone. I am sure the abs wouldn't be a bad idea......

She's bound and determined to open it up, so you might as well keep it open, its a tiny incision and should heal well. Metacam for 1 more day might make her sleepy and give it time to heal a bit more.

When incisions open up again, I never bring them back in. It closes up pretty fast anyways. I agree with metacam one more day to help her deal with it.

I gave her some Metacam 0.1 mL yesterday am and again last night. I'm not sure of the concentration though. I don't have any on hand, so I'll call the vet's and get some more. The dosing I have here is from the Rat Health Care guide by Ducommun. It is 0.25 mg/lb BID. Is this a good dose?

The dosage sounds fine, metacam is almost always 1.5 mg/ml...its made up that way.

If she's not exhibiting signs of pain or picking at the incision, I wouldn't worry and just leave it. Or if you have infant ibu at home, you can use that instead :)
