From the RMCA Drug Chart:

Bactericidal, mild broad-spectrum antibiotic. Good to prevent infection after surgery or injury, for urinary tract infections, or secondary infections. Does not attack mycoplasma directly, but in cases of multi-factorial infection, may kill off the secondary infection allowing the immune system to get the mycoplasma infection back in check. Works well in combination with Gentocin.

Amoxi was what we used when the rescue got hit with Strep Pnuemo. Amoxi combined with Tylon Bottles and Lasix. Baytril wasn't cuttin the mustard.

As a matter of fact Debbie D has it listed in her guide as the number 1 AB she finds most useful. Now granted I always take everything with a grain of salt but I did find Amoxi to work best in my situation. I still keep Baytril as my go to drug but if I find a rat not responding to it I immediately go to Amoxi as my second. I almost NEVER EVER give Doxy these days as I have never found it to work for anything I have used it for.

yes ..i use amoxi exclusively for the mice .. and since i have young ratties, its what i use for them as well .. (all but 1 of my rats is under a year old and lily who is the older gal responds to it well too, so why look a gift horse in the mouth, i figure?) i usually do wind up keeping some doxy on hand as a back up but amoxy is my go-to drug for any type of infection including URI

hope the info helps =)

It isn't very useful for myco but works well for secondary infections ... this is important because secondary respir infections will kill rats quite quickly.
Azithromycin and amoxy are very different.
We use clavamox, a similar (but stronger) member of this drug family.
