alfie has been really congested for weeks now, and has been on ABs for a while but nothing helps.
last night he got a little worse, he's got to that stage where there is no turning back. so i imagine sometime over the next couple of days i'll be having him pts.

god i get so angry! alfie has one of the best personalities i've seen in a rat and he is only about 8mths old. i hate myco and everything that goes along with it.

once he has gone i'll have just one rat left, and he will be the last i ever have in my life.

Have you tried different combos of antibiotics (such as baytril + doxy, baytril + azithromycin, baytril + clavamox)?
If his lungs are congested, lasix will help.
If different antibiotic combos don't help, you may want to try enalapril (0.25 mg/Ib twice a day). If it helps then he likely has a heart problem and other heart meds are added. Heart problems will cause respir problems. When that occurs, heart meds will help the rat to breath easier until the heart becomes too damanged.

Unfortunately rats do reach a point where meds no longer help enough and they do need to be pts so they will not suffer. If he has reached that point you may want to read this: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=9582

Give Alfie the chance to live!!!!!!!!

My boys have been sick with myco for upwards of 2 months now and on/off of various combination of antibiotics, with little response :sad3: It kills me to see them this way, but they are still responding to me... giving me big rattie eyes. Lately I've come to understand that there's a bit of an unwritten contract between them and I that when they're ready to go they will, till then I will do everything I possibly can (vet visits and antibiotics) to get them better.

Good luck!

Some rats have such bad genetics but if you can find a really good exotic vet you might be able to come up with different ideas and try some of the suggestions given for your sweetie.
It really is hard to lose them to this horrible illness...
