i adopted two rats a week or two ago/ which i know are quite old but wanted to give them a home over christmas. One of the rats have started squeaking and opening and closing their mouths trying to breathe and i have no clue what’s wrong- most of the small pets near me are closed and no other deal w these animals can someone please give me some idea on what to do

Is your location Warrington PA? The Philadelphia rat rescue Philly Rat Rescue-St Francis Rat Sanctuary ™ Inc has been great with resources for me. They could likely guide you, and might have more experience with that. I also have a list of clinics in our area that see rodents, but they would be a drive. I know rats can have respiratory issues if exposed to wood shavings, including aspen in a lot of cases. We try to use clean fleece only and paper pellets for a litter box. Very small doses (like a pennies worth) of colloidal silver can also be useful for respiratory issues... IF that ends up being the issue..... I've used it for my girls on occasion. You just have to be cautious with it.
