Hi everyone,

I haven't posted in a while but I'm glad to say I adopted three rats from the Humane Society today! I am eager to befriend them and make them feel comfortable around me. I was wondering if anyone had any tips for a new rat owner especially if they pertain to socializing them to humans and getting them used to a new owner.

hi hi hi that's what I do I just got two little guys yesterday and all day today I would take them out and just put them on my shoulders and do my normal day activity...once and a while petting them

They are very finicky and squeal when I try to pick them up. They are inquisitive (biting my fingers and licking) but I am nervous that I will scare them if I try to handle them or put them down my shirt as you all suggested. These rats are 5 months old and haven't had much handling at the shelter. I have only had them for a couple days. Do you think I should just go ahead and pick them up even if they seem scared?

When I got my first pair of ratties they were terrified. I just put them in my shirt anyway. They will calm in the warmth and darkness of your shirt (at least mine did). Just make sure you are wearing a t-shirt underneath... scratches hurt sometimes! OH and be gentle when you lift them and make sure you support all their legs.
