I've posted before about Morrissey's incessant sneezing fits. He's still not showing other signs of illness, he's rambunctious as ever and eats like a horse.

We've recently started him on .5ml of Benadryl once a day (he's 450g) to see if it helps, since I've tried everything else - different bedding, different cleaner, humidifier, no humidifier, etc etc etc etc. Here is what happens - he takes the meds. Within an hour, he is very sleepy. Sneeze-free, but half asleep. He perks up a while later, and starts going about his little Morrissey adventures, but eventually there are more bouts of sneezing. This is over the course of about 2 1/2 - 3 hours.

If Benadryl is a once/day med, and his sneezing is starting again within a couple of hours of taking it, then I am going to guess that he doesn't have allergies, or at least none that could be treated with Benadryl. If it was going to help him, shouldn't it last much longer than the brief time he is knocked out sleeping because of it?

I'm beginning to think he'll just always be a little excitement sneezer. He's the most uppity and rambunctious of the boys, and it seems to be during his peaks of excitement that the sneezing starts. Which would be okay, I just feel bad that after the exciting moment passes, the sneezes kind of linger for a little bit. His new nickname is little Sneezlerat. Poor kid.

No, not yet. I have some enro on hand, but was holding off. I brought him home back in September when he was about 11 months, he had the new home sneezes, and it seems that they've never quite gone away. He really is an excitable little fellow; it always starts up when he is transferred from the cage to the playground, or when he is having supervised intro/getting-to-know-you time with Obie, the 'new guy'. He hasn't had any sort of discharge from eyes or nose, and I would think if it was a uri starting up he would have progressed and gotten worse by now. All I have is the enrofloxacin right now, no doxy to pair it up with.

Our gregory weighs about the same, just over a pound. He's been on children's benadryl forever now. With the concentration we have(childrens, not infant) he could have up to .1 2x a day - he takes about .9. No URI, antibiotics changed nothing, but if we stop on the benadryl he can't enjoy life for the sneezing. =/

...Gregory still sneezes. But it is greatly reduced, on the Benadryl. We definitely treated for URI FIRST, and removed environmental factors like scented laundry detergent, before using it, though.

Idk. Last night he had his dose around 6pm; when I went to bed at 10 another fit started and neither he nor I got to sleep until 10:30ish. So obviously the benadryl isn't stopping the fits, but I will give it a few more days and try to determine if it's at least reducing the fits or making them shorter.

I'm really resistant to starting him on abs. Seems to me if he's been having this sneezing issue since I got him in some months back, he would have just got sicker and sicker if it was an infection. Since he hasn't grown worse or really been sick at all aside from the sneezing I assume it's got to be an allergy of some sort.

No, sometimes it will stay just sneezing for a long time. I know I'm not the only one who has gotten a "sneezy" rat that had been like that forever, and then it went away with antibiotics.

Well, would it be better to try him on the baytril I have at home, or does it have to be used in conjunction with doxy? Getting doxy or some zithro would require a field trip to the vet, which I'm not wild about, altho' certainly if baytril alone isn't enough I'll be happy to make an appointment.
