Hello, I have a question! I have searched and read all the entries on sneezing but none of them seem to fit my situation quite exactly.

first the introduction: I have owned rats on and off but its been about a 2 years since my last one. I just brought home Merlin on Monday, he was a pet shop purchase, and yes I know that they are bad and buying from them just promotes the use of puppy mill style breeders, but he was in a cage with some hairless rats that were just ruthless! they were picking on him something terrible. so long story short I now have a dark gray dumbo rat named Merlin. Blue Dumbo Smile

he is pretty young Im not sure though, and hes been sneezing. not chronically but ever once and a while. he's still kind of nervous and hides when I approach his cage. also thats when he really starts sneezing and makes this sorta clicking and squeaking noise, when I held him it didnt sound like it was coming form his chest though more from his head, I actually thought the clicking noise was that thing they do with their teeth when they are happy.

he doesnt have any runny nose, wetness, runny or crusty eyes, and he doest have any red liquid coming from his eyes, nose, or mouth. I read that sneezing can sometimes be a sign of nervousness or stress. so Im not sure which is is.

also he was in a glass aquarium tank and is now in an open wire topped cage. I use care fresh bedding and he was on a carefresh type bedding at the store.

am I being just a nervous nellie or should I contact a vet? I ve never dealt with a store rat before, my others have always come from a friend who hand raised them. so also I am curious about the best way to get him friendlyed up!

thanks, mollie

It could be just new house sneezes
thanks a ton it sounds like its just new home sneezes I feel much better and he has even sneezed less today than yesterday and its only day 2!
I have been talking out loud to myself when I am near his cage so he can get used to my voice, I read that you can even read out loud by their cages to do that to. and I have a little piece of cloth in my pocket that smells like me to put in his bedding so he can get used to my smell!

thanks for all the help, Ill keep an update with some more pictures for you all!

Thanks to everyone! merlin is doing well. I currently only have one rat, but I will be getting another one as soon as I find him a good match! I know they are social and need buddies!

He still wont let me pet him but he comes up to the door and nibles my fingers, he doesnt bite just "tastes" and I have only had him since monday so hes making progress!

Well Merlin isnt sneezing anymore! he makes a few squeeking sounds when I hold him but Im assuming he is just smelling me, I live on a farm so there is alot of new smells every day! anyway I am in the process of painting my apartment so I can move in and have TONS more space so as soon as that happens I will be getting a CN and a buddy for Merlin or perhaps two! I cant wait, it will probably be about 3 weeks before its all ready to move in. Paint and flooring have to be done before I can move in furniture!

also a friend of mine is going to give me her bunny when I move in too! her kids are all grown up and she doenst spend enough time with him anymore so I said I would love to take him in and she said sure!

but anyway back to the reason for my post!

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who helped me get through my nervous Mommy worries!

thanks again,
Mollie and Merlin!
