Hi all, first time rat owner here. I'm worried that my girls that I got last Monday are sleeping too much.

They sleep most of the day, and wake up intermittently. Even when I bring them out to play, they start sleeping after about half an hour!

Is this normal? Should I be worried?

how old are they?

They shouldn't be sleeping all that much. Rats are crepuscular but they can become diurnal and change with our schedule. But sleeping intermittently throughout the day is very normal.

Thanks for the reply. I actually took them to a vet for a general check up and brought up the issue to her. She said that since she has a healthy appetite and is alert, it's nothing to worry about and is probably just her personality.

I've also noticed that they are particularly active in their cage around 2 am and dawn. I guess we just have different schedules!

As your rats get to know you better they may change their schedule to fit yours. I know when I work night shift my rats will stay awake during the night like I do and go to sleep during the day.

Either way like the others said it seems to be normal behavior and nothing to worry about.
