I may be overly paranoid about poor Wilbur, but when I told the rescue folks how his abscessed testicle burst during its removal, they were extremely concerned about the possibility of him going into septic shock from it.

Its been three days since the surgery, and Wilbur has been on Baytril and Metacam. My confidence in reading his behaviour is completely shattered - this entire time I've thought he's happy and mellow, he must have been in so much pain. I have no baseline for his normal behaviour, so I'm afraid I might be missing warning signs. He's his usual quiet self, but he seems ... too quiet. Still is enthusiastic about his treats, and his poo is nicely firm although a little on the small side.

Do I still need to be worried? What warning signs should I be looking for?

some boys will take a few days to recover as in men in real life they are super dramatic when sick LOL

I am not sure of the signs but my boys lived with theirs alot longer than your boys and they were fine. If you have him on abs you can lessen your worry about it. It should do the trick to keep infection out. I am sure when it ruptured they cleaned it out and didnt just leave it in there it would of been a problem if it ended up exploding on him while it was in there and he wasnt in surgery. If he is acting fine and eating I am sure he is ok. Just watch him. Not to close though you can make things appear when you do LOL I know been there done that.

No one knows your rat as well as you do, even the rescue folks. I've noticed that pet owners have a gift for being able to tell when something is wrong, even subconsciously, so I think that if you think your rattie is fine, you should keep a closer eye just in case, but not be too terrified. Sometimes stressfull things like that complication during the neuter can just throw us into an insane cycle of paranoia. When Charlotte died, I was finding new issues to take Matilda to the vet with every 5 hours. Just take a deep breath, get some tea, and watch him for a few days without being jumpy.

As Peggy said, if it had burst on its own, then sepsis would be a factor but he was at the vets during surgery, they would've cleaned it all ip, so relax and enjoy your little boy

*Takes deep breath*

Sorry guys, its just been a rather sucky stressful weekend. On top monitoring Wilbur, I've also been agonizing over how to approach the clinic regarding their screwup. I think I've come up with a solution though thanks to input from my vet, the rescue folks, and our Peggy. It doesn't help that at the same time I've been fostering a hamster momma and her litter, and I just can't stop fussing even though she's showing awesome mothering instincts despite being a baby herself.

TOO MUCH GOING ON!!

:gaah:

It is a major stress filled time when you deal a vet that did you wrong. As you know I know from experience. The ending is bitter sweet though you feel like you fought for your boy and you win. You send a demand letter, they send it to their insurance usually, check into small claims for the county that the clinic was in you can file there if they fight. I have found that needing to think has worked, they always seem to find more money when I leave them hangin LOL.
