I've been currently treating one of my rats (Izzy) for a URI. My other rat Emma seems to have been doing fine.

But now she doesn't want to do anything but sleep, she hardly eats, and she has diarrhea like poo! :panic:

I have baytril in the fridge that i was using for Izzy but the vet switched her meds, would baytril help Emma at all??

I don't think I'd try Baytril. It sounds more like a stomach upset. Did she eat anything new or different?
Try and give her some soda crackers.

speaking of salt ... why shouldn't she have it? can you give rats salt wheels? (i guess its a wheel u hook onto your cage that animals can lick to get salt off of)

Salt is natural in fruit and vegetables (celery has a high salt count), so added salt is not required in any diet (including our own). From the human perspective i know salt can raise a blood pressure if you eat too much

Okay i'll try the cracker. A tiny update: Emma has quite a bit of porphyrn on her nose; i thought i would add that to the symptom list, let me know if that changes anything.

One more off topic-ish questions,
can rats get car sick (like upset stomach and what not since they cant throw up)??
When i take Emma for rides in the car she'll often ride in my lap or on my shoulder but sometimes she'll lay flat on her stomack with her back legs out of the way and her front legs all the way forward so her tummy is all the way down.

Thanks Everyone!

Okay thats good, when should i know when to take her to the vet?? I know i probably sound like an over worried rat mommy but she's acting so weird! She just lays in her cage and doesnt move and when she does she kinda waddles/slow hops with her back legs very slowly only a few feet. :cry3:

I just want her to be better because she was the first rat that i got and she's so sweet

How old is your sweetie? Could she maybe have fallen? Do you feel any lumps in her tummy? I would take her to the vet for a check up. Good luck.

She's 3 months old

She could have fallen...i had her in my shirt earlier and she started screeming and i looked down at her and i could find anything wrong with her i picked her up and checked her over and she seemed fine. I'll do a full examine on her and check for anything weird. I hope she didn't hurt herself!

Okay i checked her, no lumps or bumbs but her right foots doing weird. Shes babying it and when i held her and pressed on it she squeaked.
Nothing seemed out of place or twisted weird.

She doesnt seem to be using that foot much at all to grab things here's a pick of her on my arm. She's grabbing with her left foot and front paws but she chooses to let the right foot hang.

Could this possible injury cause some of the earlier stated issues?

Also what can i do to make her feel the most comfortable if anything is indeed wrong?

At the moment i've mood the food bowl down to the first level along with that i've provided lots of fabric for her to hide in. I also have been feeding her baby food once a day to help her gain weight back.

I'll be up all night doing some research so i'll reply back as soon as possible :coffee:
Thanks again
:urock:

If she hurt her paw, she will stay more quiet... Not sure about the loose poop unless she's very stressed about it.
But it should heal quite fast and on it's own.

Well im glad that it will heal quickly.
Also since the foot probably doesn't relate to the loose poo i'll start giving her some yogurt and what not to help her with that.

Thank You Everyone!!

Does she retract the foot? It could be broken, if she just lets it hang there, or drag it there could be a clean break. Things like this should be delt with fast as bacteria and nasty bugs begin to harvest and infect that area and you could end up with a very sick rat :sad3:

But if it is just a sprain or strain they heal very quickly and they are back to normal in no time.
