Shimei's Foot...Don't Assume Anything :P

Awhile back little Shimei (who thinks ALL rats should love her) decided to squeeze through the bars of Inca's cage and got a few bites and a lot of terror for her efforts. Small surface wounds on her back, nothing major at all, but I figured that it would teach her to stay away from Inca. Nope :roll: She crawled on her cage and got a bite on the hock. I looked at it and "assumed" it was nothing and would heal up well. I was very distracted by Lilith, and my other sickies here, until about 4 days later I realized Shimei was hopping. I checked her over and found her hock completely swollen and red. I started her on baytril but soon added metrodanizole when the baytril wasn't doing enough. She went on metacam for the swelling which didn't come down at all I started hot water soaks as well, and she was soooo good! After a few half-hearted tries to get out of the sink (just to see if I was serious), she would finally stop and just stand on her hind feet with her front quarters resting on my open hand. She then would fix her eyes on me and make a little sigh, then start bruxxing and boggling. I would apologize and tell her how much I loved her. She got so good at this she settled as soon as I put her in the water, but she wanted my hand there as comfort and would start the fixated bright-eyed stare and the bruxxing and boggling within seconds. :heart: :heart:

I'm glad her foot is getting better - and healing so fast once it got the picture!

What a sweet girl! I'm sure she knows all the soaks were for her own good and she obviously doesn't hold it against you. I hope she continues to improve.

Oh wow, that's kind of neat seeing it heal in each of the pics. Very cool!

PB did that to me once too, they didn't like my pic of Jorge's pyoderma. lol

Oh no!! Just surface/tissue...no bone involvement.

When u guys say that u started a rat on baytril or whatever, what do u mean by that...did u take them to the vet to get checked out..or do u have a bottle of the stuff lying around..if so where could I get some?
I'd love just a broad spectrum antibiotic like baytril on hand for like emergencies.

I have a relationship with my vet. He knows I have to react quickly in some rescue situations and I am allowed to have stuff on hand like metacam, steroids, some abs, etc.

I sometime's think that with my six vet bill's are getting way too much *lol*

I have 5 right now, but I've lost 6 since March so we've been to the vet quite a bit the last year. I also have two bunnies, although they seem to don't need vet care as much as my rats. Shelagh has many more rats than I do... just look at all her threads.
