I took Sammie in to see the vet today, because her breathing had been noisy and not helped by Baytril/Doxy. I'd switched Doxy for Clavamox and even added a bit of lasix because she sounded so bad the other night.

I got a surprise when he looked at her; he spotted some gunk in her ear that couldn't be syringed out. He put her under briefly and found/removed a polyp. I hadn't recalled anyone talking about polyps before, but a Search turned up this post from Shelagh a long while back. The photo of the ratty's ear looks just like what Sammie had.

So no wonder she was feeling bad. I will keep up the Clavamox because either it or the Lasix is helping her. I may have another heart patient on my hands, and Sammie is still young. :(

wow....poor little Sammie....so many heart problems in the rats in this area...
I noticed that too compared to US forums there is mention of it very frequently here :(

I'm sorry to hear about Sammie, I hope it can be controlled with medications.

I don't know if we really have more rats with heart problems.
Many vets do not recognize heart problems so it goes untreated.
Heart problems are very common, especially in aging rats.
I have found that when different combos of antibiotics don't work, it is usually a heart problem.
