last night i went to give the boys their supper and found romar dead in a hut. his entire underside was wet, there was a lot of either dried blood or porphrin from his nose and around his mouth and chin. romar was a neutered male, was approximately 23 months and just starting to develop old man skin. he was strong and a big built boy but only recently starting to replace the muscle for pudge. he was aging gracefully. he has not shown any signs of illness (no sneezing, no loss of appetite or energy or change of mood) and this was completely unexpected.

i had a necropsy done this morning. there were spots of inflammation in his intestines, he had a fatty benign tumor beginning to grow just under his rib cage. his heart, liver and kidneys were fine. his lungs on the other hand we're in bad shape, he had pneumonia and this is what the vet considers his cause of death. he had not shown symptoms of any resp illness previous to his death.

the speed of this has me concerned. i know pneumonia, i've done pneumonia, i don't think i would miss symptoms. the unexplained inflammation in the intestines also has me concerned. the vet said it may have been bad enough to give him a bit of a belly ache and possibly a symptom of a virus. now, it could simply be that i missed the signs or that romar was excessively good at hiding them, but my worry is of SDA or something similar.

i've been reading up on the possible symptoms and signs and understand that not all rats will show symptoms. but it makes no mention that i have been able to find about inflammation in the intestines or any mention of results of necropsys. so i ask help for my research in this. if anyone knows of sites or articles that discuss SDA, necropsies related to SDA, or know of a name or site for another virus that would fit please pass them my way.

i have already gone through ratguide and rcma

It is a concern when it's so sudden. But I've seen it in mine where they hide their illness so good, you barely catch it on time. Your vet would need to do studies of the organs to get right down to what was the cause and that can be expensive.

The only comfort you can take out of this is that it wasn't a long dragged out battle. Keep a close eye on your other rats, take note of every symptom however trivial it may seem.

I have no information regarding what you are looking for but wish to say how sorry i am that your fur baby has passed.

Sorry to hear of the sudden death of Romar. At least his quick passing was peaceful.

Have you spoken to your vet about possible SDAV?
If you suspect it, you need to keep a close eye on your other rats. You should try and speak to a vet or knowledgeable person (as Shelagh suggested) and see what they think

I found one of my girls (only 12 months) lethargic one morning. She had shown no signs of illness. I rushed her to the vet and it was pneumonia. Vet wasn't sure she would make it but Cookie did make it to 33 months. I was lucky.

I'm so sorry for your loss. :hugs:

A few years ago there was confirmed SDA in Saint John NB in a pet store rat. (http://www.rmca.org/Data/)
These diseases (SDA, SV, etc) are coming into the maritimes. Since most vets down here know nothing about rats and most people do not provide vet care, we have no way of knowing how prevalent these diseases are.

Twitch, I am so sorry that this is happening.
I am very sorry about Romar.
I hope that you will be able to medically confirm what has affected your colony.
Hope your remaining ratties are doing ok.
