Haley has been hiding in a box for 2 days now I couldn't figure out why. She looked a little ragged when she came out tonight so I gave them all their treat and this is how she was eating them! Help me please in telling me if she's had a stroke or PT, as you can see shes not using her feet. What should I do? I'm so upset that something bad has happened and I didn't help her out of the box and she was stuck there. She also latched onto my finger. :cry4:

Classic PT in my eyes, she looks good though. She's bright and still able to move around. If you decide to treat her get steroids and antibiotics, the steroids are what does the trick and reduces the inflammation that causes the symptoms. I would advise pulling her out of the gang for soft food feedings (baby cereal, ground up lab blocks, Ensure or soy milk)...so that she gets enough to eat (they are young in that cage and will steal from her).

Sorry MC :sad3:

How long does PT take to get bad?

all depends on what's going on inside the head (the growth of the tumour on the pituitary gland can differ). This one looks in a middling stage, and sometimes they can live awhile at this stage or the pressure could make them immobile quite quickly. PT is a very unknown factor, it really is best to pounce on the symptoms as soon as you see them.

Im just very scared that something will happen this weekend and im at work all weekend for 12 hrs. And I won't be able to get her in. Is she in pain? :sad3:

PT looks awful but its more confusion than pain. Once she's on the steroid, you should hopefully see a reduction in symptoms or even better a drastic improvement (it doesn't always work, but its best to try) and you should see this in 1-4 days (1 day is more for if she is able to get the dex injection, its very fast acting).

Does she only get the shot once? How often does she get the steriod?

She gets the initial injection (like a steroid kickstart) at the vet's office, then goes on to oral prednisone every day after that to keep it maintained. Most vets won't send home injectable meds so you have to get oral.

Sometimes PT is so gradual you don't notice the initial symptoms. My vet doesn't think the rat is in pain with PT. Good luck with your sweetie.

the symptoms before this stage are so minimal, that you just feel funny niggling feelings that something isn't quit "right", then you stare at your girl and go back and forth, if you actually DO see anything. I would say this is earlier stages as well. Don't worry in the least, this is where most owners figure out something is wrong. :cuddle:

Ok so I took her in and she has PT. They gave her all those things. I got pred pills that I have to crush up and give her. We will see how it goes from here. My vet has put in her chart just in case shes not there to have her properly and humanely pts. She is to be gased and I am to be in the room. So that makes me feel better as some will not use the gas.

Glad to hear this! We will help you make a solution with your pred pills, do you have an approx weight of your girl? What strength are the pills? (mg)
