Stefan had an abcess a couple of months ago.. It was treated by a vet, and he was on I think it was baytril for a week or two..
But now I think it has returned(he has a lump on almost exactly the same spot as the abcess, and it looks the same).
I am most likely going to the vet tomorrow afternoon with him.
But is there anything I/the vet can do so it won't happen again?
It is still closed as I just saw it half an hour ago or something..

What might have happened is that the abscess closed up before it was fully healed. You need more Baytril and make sure not to use an ointment on the abscess once it pops. You don't want to promote healing from the outside in. It needs to heal inside out or you'll trap the infection inside.

Thanks for your answer.
The last time it seemed to heal from the inside, and have been fine for several months(I dont remember when I had him to the vet, but he was healed long before Nirvana was spayed).
I hope he´ll heal properly this time..
I´m going to a rat vet this time(couldn´t get an appointment last time and he´d stopped eating).
Going to the vet in 4 hours

Where is the abscess?

Did you flush it daily after it was lanced?
It is on his belly near his manly bits.
I tried to. The vet said it healed up nicely, but she wasn´t a rat vet.
There was also some trouble with the abs.
The first time(I originally got bactrim, if you have that there. But I couldn´t get it in him..) my dad got baytril, but he only got for five days(the vet said he should get 10 days, but someone did wrong), and he had a weeks pause and then got the 10 days he should.
Could this have something to do with it?

It opened up on its own on the way to the vet btw.
Leaving for the vet in a few min.
He is one of the best(or possibly the best) vet around here.

Bactrim is the best drug for abscesses...to bad you couldn't get him to take it.
I don't think the pause in between meds is what caused it to come back.

Bactrim is completely hopeless to get in him.
He got a shot of baytril(i think), and I´m going back in two weeks. What do you rinse it with?
I completely forgot to ask :wallbang:

I might be wrong here, but I thought Baytril should not be injected, because it eats away at the tissue and can cause serious complications.

Normally they are given orally here, but they (apparently) have one kind that lasts for two weeks(he is hell to get medication into, and I´m going to the hospital tomorrow..)
I have never heard anything bad about it tho..
I don´t _know_ if it was baytril, but it was that I was going to get before he came up with the injection..
We don´t have many of the kinds of abs over here that you have :(

It was probably the Convenia shot. It does last longer but I don't think it's 2 weeks, more like 1 week in rats. It might help with the abscess.
You can flush it making your own saline mix, water and salt.

He checked on the computer, and it said two weeks(he believed it was 3.)
I wouldn´t know tho..
I suck at stuff like that..
How much salt should I use?
Will be difficult to do it the next few days tho :(
My father is not at all comfortable with things like that..
