Hello everyone,

I am on a budget right now and two of my boys started to sneeze, they also have more porphyrine around their noses. If I have to go to the vet I will of course find the money and go, but if I can save money it would be great. I was wondering if the 10% baytril sold there is good: http://www.ladygouldianfinch.com/product_baytril.php ? Anyone bought if from there before? I would also need help with the good amount to give to them, as I am terrible in maths!

Thanks a lot!

I really wouldn't trust meds sold online but even if they're fine, they're coming from the States during the holidays. It's very unlikely they'll clear customs and get to you quickly enough. Most rats need more than one antibiotic to treat respiratory infections, so you'll either have to scramble to get other meds elsewhere or end up going to the vet anyway. Baytril at most vets in Montreal will cost you less than that for two rats, although you will have to pay for an exam.

Here's a list of exotic vets in the Greater Montreal Area: https://www.facebook.com/notes/doctor-a ... 3231982704 Dr. Brieger will be practicing in Longeuil again in the new year but that doesn't sound like it'll be soon enough for you.

With the weather getting colder, my rats and even I am having some nasal issues. I do not treat rats if there is just sneezing and porphyrin. I've found when I did it didn't help at all.

A humidifier would be a good idea.

For now, I would just keep a close eye and an open ear. Be sure to listen for any grunting/wheezing sounds.

Minky-Chester makes a ''duck'' sound sometimes. And some ''baby birds'' sound too.
Maadox is just sneezing, more and more.

Has anything changed in their habitat? New litter? Is it dryer in the house? New fragrance or smoke around them?

Nope, same old same.
The humidity level is good, around 55%.
There's no smoke or perfume in the house, for the rare occasions that I put perfume on I put it in the bathroom with the fan on, and don't go too much near the cage.
I changed all my soaps and cleaners for ''fragrance free'' ones, to make sure they were not allergic to anything. Only two of my boys are showing symptoms ( I have 5).

Darn...
Can you rat phone them? Hold them up to your hear and try and listen to their lungs. Do you hear any wheezing?

Maadox seems to be fine today, normal sneezing, normal porph.

Minky was sneezing like crazy early morning, when I woke up I didn't hear any sneezing, porph was ok, then I had to go to work. I don't hear anything abnormal when I listen to him closely.
Weird,weird.

For the excessive sneezing, you could try giving them benedryl. If it helps, then it might just be an allergen. But keep a close eye on them, in case it is an infection, you'll should try to be ready for a vet visit.
Respiratory infections can get severe real fast.
