So I just rescued 2 hairless sisters. They are at least 2 years old.
One of them has an old eye injury. I've made an appt with the vet on Monday (soonest available). In the meantime, should I start her on the medication I already have, Cipro?
She also has a weird wart like thing on her back. Any guesses on what it could be?

Any advice would be appreciated.

the lump may be a cyst that has burst open? By dog has a subbacous (sp?) cyst under her ear, the vet said not to worry unless it got bigger, then it may burst --> looking somewhat like what your girly has on her back. Not sure if this needs to be cleaned and maybe a course of ABS - but im just pulling that out of thin air with no basis behind it....

As for the eye injury I cant say....

SO glad that you rescued these sisters - they desprately needed to get out of that hampster cage...

I wouldn't do anything for the eye until you see the vet. It might be totally resolved and no need for anything.
That cyst on her back is very common with double rexes and hairless. It's probably a keratin cyst. It's best to just leave those alone.

There was an episode of 'campus vets' about a hairless rat with several keratin cysts like that. I think they removed a few of the bad ones, but left most of them. I can't remember if there was anything done about the rest.

They're real lucky to have found a home with you <3

Oh I'm soooo glad you rescued them Lexi, and once again your pictures are of incredible quality.

How is the girlie doing? Is she stressed? eating and drinking well? If there doesn't appear to be any suffering, then I'd leave things til the vet appt. The cyst doesn't look red ar aggravated but then again I know nothing about them... And if the eyes isn't bothering her, again I'd just wait to see what the vet says.

I'm so happy you've got them xxx

Just got back from a trip to the vet.
This is a different animal hospital, so I was able to get an appointment today.
The vet said that Joi's eye is a "blind eye" and that it looks like it's been that way awhile. It has a lot of scar tissue on the eyeball. He was thinking it might be painful for Joi, because she keeps it closed, so he put in a numbing drop, to see if she would relax and quick keeping it closed, but she kept it closed. So he thinks that means it's not too painful for her.
So he gave me some eye drops to use for a week. It looks like she may have scratched it while cleaning, or something irritated it (not the eyeball, but the surrounding eyelid)
He said that if I wanted to, He could put her under and remove the eye, and the 2 cysts that she has. But it would run $300+
I figured, since she doesn't seem to be in pain, seems active and healthy otherwise (and she's over 2 years old) I'd just let her be.

I agree with Jo on this Lexi,

if she is doing well without any indication of trouble or pain then let the little lady be. :love6:

At 2 years of age; surgery could be a little risky.

I'll try to get some more photos today.
I'm so happy these girls are so sweet and trusting even though they may not have had the best life.
I'm very happy with my decision to rescue them.

Wonderful news! I'm so glad you rescued these sweet girls.

It's always such a worry when there is an eye problem; so hard to tell if there is pain. But your girl seems not to be suffering any ill effects. How nice that she doesn't have to have surgery.

Isn't it wonderful to get rats who have had a yucky life and see them show appreciation to the person that is giving them a good life.
