rattie making funny noise

Hi...its been a long time. My 2 ratties seem to be just fine, but one of them is making a very odd noise. It is not the clicking sound that they usually make. It is kind of a guteral sound. It is so hard to explain. She is loud enough that she wakes me up. When she does this, she is sometimes alone and very still. I am usually pretty scared at first because I think she is dying, but I may be very wrong. She still runs around and is the first to get to her dish to eat. I took her to bed with me this morning when she was making the sounds and she stopped. Does anyone elses ratties make odd sounds????? Pls advise. She is not quite 2 yet. What is the oldest you have ever heard of a rat living?

My boys have a bad habit of sleeping on their heads, and it clogs their nasal passages so that they grunt while sleeping. Next time you hear the noise, try sneaking up on their cage so you can see what they are doing to make the sound. You can also put their chest right up to your ear, on each side, and listen for popping or wheezing in the chest/lungs.

There can be many reasons for breathing issues. It might be a good idea to see a vet to make sure she doesn't have a respiatory infection.
