I gave up on trying to maintain rat nails. I used to actually clip them like you would cat nails, but they squirmed and it becamse a huge chore. They learned what the nail clipers were and ran away to hide. It made me feel bad. Then I tried putting a brick in their cage under their water bottle so that they would have their nails filed down by it... no... they just peed on it (honestly within 2 days that thing was soooo nasty - I didnt even try to save it).

Honestly, now I just put up with it, unless it looks like they need some help clipping them. For example, I noticed that my oldest rattie had a really long nail that was preventing her foot from lieing flat on the ground, so I trimmed it. It took a good 5 minutes to trim that one nail (with baby fingernail clippers), but its done.

Sorry that this isn't more of a help. You can try the above tho. Just be careful when clipping with the nail clippers - dont cut too high up on the nail or you will end up with bleeding.
