I know it's possible for rats to have allergies, but I want to make sure that it is such a thing before I just go and make a bad decision.

Last year when I first acquired Delilah, she of course had new home sniffles. I took her and Sniffles to the vet and he said everything was okay, he couldn't hear anything in the lungs, and that it was obviously environmental as neither of them were sneezing at the vets.

A few weeks later Delilah started to sneeze more often, all ready getting over her new home sniffles, but this time it was more frequent and she was now sneezing in her sleep and it sounded like she had a terribly stuffy nose, so she was doing what I heard as a rattie equivalent of snoring. At first it was just at night, it then moved on to all the time and she sounded as if she was having trouble breathing out of her nose. She was doing it, but making lots of noise.

I thought it might have been the type of bedding I used, being as it was carefresh, so I changed it to fleece. She was mostly fine after that, but I couldn't be sure if it was the bedding or something else. As summer came in, all the symptoms went away.

I would say less than a month ago I took them for their one year, Delilah was sneezing again, but not often. Again, nothing was wrong, the only thing he said was that they're both slightly overweight and I've since changed their diet to reflect that.

Again, about amount of time between, Delilah is doing exactly the same thing.

I know my mother, me and my boyfriend are all all ready starting to sneeze from our allergies, and that pollen can cause rats issues. I just want to make sure that its allergies and not something else I should be worried about.

And just for information, I don't wear perfume often, I don't use febreeze in my room, I don't spray anything and have a humidifier going sometimes in the night (which is cleaned every two days).

Help :sad3:

Absolutely they can have allergies or just a sneezy kind of rat. My mom had a rat like that. Sneezed all his life... lived to be 34 months old with his sneezes.

A few things my vet told us to try is allergy elixir, it would work but we didn't keep him on it, it was on an off. Also, an air purifier might help as well.

I figured she's a sneezy rat :D

I'll post a video tomorrow night to show how she sounds, I figured it must be allergies, seeing as nothing else has changed, no red stuff, no change in sleeping habits, no change in personality, just sneezing and sleep sounds.

I'm looking in to getting an air purifier, the problem with those type of things for me at least, is the fact that my bedroom door doesn't close all the way, my house settles all the time causing it to go sideways and I just haven't the time to fix it.

And allergy elixir? Like Benadryl?

Have you tried benedryl to see if it helped?
You've had her checked and lungs sounded good... so probably not much else you can do except keep an eye out for any other symptoms.

All right bought the benadryl, bought the dye free kind, figured the less sugar the better :)

Just gave it to her, we'll see how it works.

Have been using it off and on for a couple days, getting her to take it makes me: :gaah:

It seems to help for a little while, her sneezes seem to produce more, and she doesn't make as much noise. Which is nice, very nice. I also bought a air purifier, which has helped a bit.

But today after having to give both my girls a bath (Unfortunately they both got in to a tube of chapstick and SOMEHOW covered themselves in it. I forgot I had left it on my bed when I let them out to run. Dhurr.) I noticed Delilah was breathing pretty hard, even after she had calmed down from the bath and was running about.

I made sure it just wasn't normal for them, as I haven't had to pay attention to their breathing since I've got them (though I know I always should), but she was definitely breathing differently then Sniffles. So I made another bloody appointment with the doc to make sure nothing has settled in her lungs.

I'm a very paranoid mom.

Could she have gotten water in her nose? Good luck with your sweetie. For me Benadryl only worked for a while. Jazz and Sven were both sneezy rats but lived past 30 months.

It's possible, the hard breathing continued for about a day, but it was obvious there's been a change in her breathing since.

I took her to the vet today, mostly because a few nights ago she started up pretty bad and it lasted a lot longer than it had.

He told me exactly what everyone's told me, it's 90% probable it's allergies, he of course prescribed me some antibiotics, just in case it was bacterial. He said he was sure it wasn't, but it wanted to make 100% sure.

I trust this vet, not only have I known him for over 15 years (mind you I'm only 23), but he owns rats and has for at least as long as I've known him.

He told me the benadryl is okay, but to actually give her less than .5, in fact .1 should be fine. I might find a middle ground with .2 and a half :D.

So I'm going to give her these antibiotics, for the ten days... oh man I forgot to ask if I can give them the antibitotics as well as the benadryl. Gonna have to ask them when I go back to pay
