I wasn't sure if I should post this in the ER area or here, but because it's not an emergency I decided on here.

Anyway, I have 4 baby male rats for adoption and having problems placing them. I know I shouldn't have but they all have names :) I really don't want 2 cages, so I was wondering about getting the boys fixed, buying a double CN and putting everyone together.

My questions are:
1) Whats the aproximate price of getting a male fixed. I know it depends on the vet, but what were your experiences.
2) Is it hard for them to recuperate afterwards? Is it long?
3) what medication is given to the rats after the operation? Antiflamatorys, antibiotics?

And anything else you can mention to me :)

I was at he vets today and didn't think to ask, but I also want to know a few personal experiences.

Thank you :)

If the rat is healthy and the vet is experienced at doing surgery with rats, then neuters are ok.
Price varies according to vet and where you live.
Rats recuperate quite quickly.
Meds after surgery are metacam for pain and an antibiotic
Rats frequently develop a neuter abscess after surgery
Neuters with my vet are approx $100

Spays are more expensive then neuters but have huge health benefits

My vet charges $125 for a neuter. Once neutered, you should wait about 4 weeks so they aren't fertile anymore before mixing them in with females.

My vet charges about $200, and I've had vets in the past quote me much more. It's best to call around and ask as prices can vary a lot. I always get anti-inflammatories after surgery (Metacam) and it depends on the rat/situation whether I get antibiotics or not. Most people say you should wait two weeks before introducing a neutered male to intact females, but it's best to confirm that with your vet.

My vet also charges $200 but we don't give any meds unless we see the rat is clearly in pain. A healthy rat recovers within a day or two.

OK I'll be calling my vet today and find out how much.....Getting my rabbit fixed cost me 50$ I was hoping for that price, but I see here that it's probably not gonna happen. I'll call the place where I got my rabbit fixd also. it's out of the way, but they were good and it wasn't expensive.

Chances are your vet who fixed your rabbit will charge about the same price as the rabbit. My vet charges $200 for a rabbit as well. That would be an awesome price.

OK :p I'll definately check them out then. Of course it was 4 years ago, I'm sure the prices have gone up. But hopefully not that much.
