I am introducing my boys, Loki and Templeton to my 5 girls. it has been a month since the neuters, the intros with the boys were an epic fail so we are trying a different route.

I need to learn about the mating rituals of rats. I can see the dance the girls put on but they seem to do some odd things and the boys act odd too.

i see them getting on their sides a lot to the boys. The boys are so gentle when approaching them. Templeton is a bruiser who likes to hit other rats with his front paws LOL.

or just information on girl/male rat intros will work too. this is new to me so I found it to be totally different from the same sex intros.

When Kiki (just over a year old at the time) was introduced to Roland and Archie (about 2 1/2 months), she would run in front of them and kick them vigerously in the face. They were pretty nonplussed at first, but soon worked out they were supposed to chase Kiki so she could kick them in the face while running away.

The only real point of contention that my rats have had is that Kiki is a very clean rat who always leaves the nest to fastidiously widdle down my walls, while the boys are not. I made sure there was enough nesting material for two or three sleeping places, otherwise Kiki would just lie on the food shelf, glaring balefully at anyone who passed.

Interesting! templeton was kinda stomping the ground a bit. I dont know if they will try to mount them at all? did yours try?

The females like the chase. They also will do the ninja kick to keep the male behind them. Little hops, short jumps or movements around the boys...that's pretty much it. And if the girl gets touched in the golden spot (top of the romp near the waist area) she will go into full lordosis (arching of the back) and try to fly with her ears. lol

Then what is all this laying on their side, 3 of the girls girls like let them pin them, they lay on their sides, are they just really submissive?

so templeton just answered my question, he mounted bindi lol.......are they always puffy when they do that? Templeton puffs when he is angry, but i need to know if he does this when mounting too.

Roland has tried to mount Kiki a few times, but he's rubbish at it... he always gets his leg hooked over her tail, so that no actual contact of loins is made. I don't think Archie tries to mount, but when Kiki chooses to sleep next to him, he always lays his chin on her flank and bruxes away fit to burst.

They get very puffy and wound up when mating. But even though I was forced to slam my hand between rats at urgent moments during initial meetings before the post-neuter month was quite up, there was no aggression towards Kiki or me.

do they keep doing it? or do they actually get used to the opposite sex being in the cage? or will they have mating rituals everytime a girl is in heat till I have them spayed?

My boys kept doing it until she was spayed..
I think she was imagining she was pregnant tho, because she didn´t get in heat as often after a while(She was too young to be spayed)..
I do not know if this is the norm tho, since she´s my first and only female..

that might work out to my advantage for intros :laugh4: If Templeton is so busy trying to mount 5 girls, there is little time left for attitude!

least he has a purpose now LOL other than biting on hairless rats. Mally does not approve of the humping though, she gets kinda angry at him for humping bindi.
