Hi everyone im new  and i just want to ask some questions about rat health.
So here goes.
1. My rat has a really bad resp and I want to try non-prescription antibiotics. Does tetracycline for fish/birds work? Is amoxicillin presciption or over-the-counter?
2. If it ever came to it i wouldnt want my rat to be hurting lots and dying slowly so what is a humane way to euthanise a rat at home? Would an overdose of a pain killer or sleeping drug or something work?
3. what other non-prescription drugs help a rat resp?

thanks

Are these questions for real? You are asking about overdosing your rat on painkillers? How can anyone think that would be a good idea?

Firstly this is a RESCUE forum there is nothing humane about doing this to your rat. Second, the ONLY humane way is to take them to the vet to be euthanized and that requires them to gas them first and then an injection to the heart when the rat is knocked out. There isnt a humane way to put them to sleep at home.

We take pet care VERY seriously here, this type of behavior IS NOT tolerated or taken well.

You have to have prescriptions for any drug that will help with their URI's. You can try amoxi but it may or may not work. You really should have baytril or doxy combo, rats will pass away fast due to URI issues that turn into pneumonia. I would look for a vet or a rescue in your area maybe a breeder for this to find a decent vet to see rats.

Rats require vet care. There's no getting around that.
There are NO over the counter, or fish medications that are suitable for rats.
Rats MUST be brought to a qualified vet for a proper humane euthanasia.

THERE IS NO HUMANE METHOD OF EUTHANASIA DONE AT HOME. NONE. Please don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
