My rat Elin (1,6 years old) usually prefered to hide and sleep somewhere by herself, and generally didn't like to play or fight with other rats (she squeaked a lot), but was healthy. However, these days I noticed she has become lethargic, she remains for most of the time in one corner of the cage, gathers the bedding into a nest around her and sleeps a lot. Even out of the cage, she doesn't move very much. If I put her on me, she sleeps there, which she never did before. Most importantly, her breathing, although completely noiseless, seems faster. I might as well add that some time ago I noticed she had scabs and blood under her fur, however, when I checked her two days ago, there was nothing of it left.

So: otherwise smooth but faster breathing, clean fur, no -apparent- skin problems, no porhyrin, etc. BUT she sleeps or remains still in one place, and today I had to put the food bowl in front of her to eat. Yesterday, however, she ate treats by herself, normally.

Could it be mites? That affect her behavior? I haven't seen her scratch so much lately, though. She never had breathing problems before, nor anything else.

Should I expect the worst? And even if I took her to a vet, how do I know for sure he knows what the rat has, because he isn't a rat expert, and there aren't any in my country.

Any ideas?

what is 1.6 years old in months? Is that 19 months? When you offer her a treat can she grasp the food in both hands properly? Does she seem tired or is she confused?

When you rat phone her, what do you hear?

Have you examined her fully and carefully for lumps in her abdomen etc?

I'm sorry, I meant to say 1 year and 6 months.

Yes she can grasp the treat, she generally eats and moves around slower. I let her out half an hour ago, she went to ''explore'' my bed a bit, however, as I said, she walks slowly. I also gave her a treat, she took it but let it fall. Yesterday night, she did eat some, and she drank water normally.

I tried to listen to her lungs, I didn't hear anything, however I'll try it again properly.

I haven't examined her either. What could these lumps you mentioned mean?

When she's sitting or laying still, you can see her head slightly bobbing as she breathes. And she keeps her eyes half-closed for most of the time, unless she hears something startling.

I don't know if I explained this well enough, so please forgive my poor English.

Hmm...Techno bobbed his head when he was struggling to breath, but with him you could clearly hear there were problems. If you can't hear any issues then I'm not sure its an URI issue, maybe she's just getting older and has become a bit more lazier then usual? I'm no expert sorry, just talking out of the recent experience i had

I so wish it would be something like that-getting older or something. But I'm too worried that she's going to die suddenly, and the worst thing is, the thing that is making me feel really terrible, that at the moment I can't find money for a vet. No one in my family has spare money to give me, and I called here and there a few part-time jobs to get money fast, and no-one even answered. Also, all my rats seem to get sick on the wrong time-on holidays, weekends...And I also need to find at least 100 euros to have my oldest rat's tumors removed. AND she just started developing a third one. This is off-topic, I know. But I'm going crazy with all these sudden health problems. At first, I thought a tumor was the worst thing, but then I discovered how fast and painfully can respiratories take a rat away...

I made up my mind: no more rats in the future. :(

If your rat is healthy and breathing normally, you have to look at them pretty closely to see them breathe. If you can see your rat obviously breathing with each breath, then they probably are sick. Respiratory problems or heart problems can cause a change in breathing and activity levels.
She should be seen by a vet - sorry. If you can't get a job to raise money, maybe you could sell something you have?

Tomorrow, I'll look for a temporary job again. (Like handing brochures). I've gathered a few addresses and phone numbers, and supposing I'll get to work I'll have enough money to pay a vet visit by the middle of this week. I just hope she won't get worse in the meantime. :?

Elin died yesterday-and I saw that she had blood coming from her genitals...what can I say...it was the first time I ever watched an animal dying... :(

the blood coming from her genitals was either a uterine infection, masses in her uterus or a genital myco infection. I am very sorry you lost Elin.
