Yesterday I noticed that my oldest rattie Kenny had hurt his back feet and they were both red and swollen.
He's needed a nail trim for quite some time but I kept getting side tracked.
They were quite bad.
Off to Dr. Munn for a $20.00 trim.
Kenny is my Nieces but since she hasn't the money I paid it.
My vet bills now total close to $ 400.00 in a very short time.
I will keep paying for what needs to be done despite all the flack I get for the $$ spent.
I have Kenneth on Children's Ibuprofen.
Is this okay?
He's also on Doxy, Baytril and Theo.
I feel so bad.
He can hardly move poor boy.

Poor little guy. The ibu should be fine for pain management.
It's really tough having multiple rats who are sick or needing vet care.

Yesterday and the day before both feet were swollen and a bit red but nothing too bad but this morning.....?
Kenny's one foot is so swollen it looks like the skin might split. :gaah:
The other foot is more the less the same.
He is dragging his legs twisting his back end so as not to hurt himself more.
I now have him by himself in the lower half of the CN.
Do you think he broke his foot? :(
Poor boy is losing weight and looking pretty rough.
:gaah: Nutz!!!

Poor old man! Remember that typically with surgery or injuries, the swelling and bruising peaks the second day afterwards, so it may not have been at its worst when you noticed it. Is his foot really hot? If so, maybe some cool compresses would help a little. The ibuprofen is an antiinflammatory, so it should help too.

Well it's MUCH worse!!!
Kenny has a appointment with Dr. Munn at 3:30pm.
The skin split and I have never seen this type of foot issue before. :thud:
Kenny needs healing vibes.
He's such a lovely boy.

Oh god the poor lad!!! Swelling like that could be injury, heart issues or a bacterial infection. The split skin and even fluid oozing from the surface is from all the pressure inside. :(

Good luck to the sweet old man :(

Could it be from his nail trim?
Could he be diabetic?
I didn't see any cuts but his poor foot looks like it's rotting.
I will let you know what he says.

Back from Dr Munn's.
Without taking xray's, it could be one of three things.
1. An infection.
2. A leg break.
3. A tumor.

I can't afford the xray's so he gave me Metacam and a shot of it as well as Buprenorphine for pain.
Kenny is sleepy and seems to be resting more comfortably.
I hope it helps because the stress for both of us is awful.

The bottom is filled with blood and looks a lot worse.

I have seen worse Shar...don't despair. Metacam will help no matter what. Did he send you home with buprenorphine to inject?

No.
He was sweet enough not to charge me for the shots tho.
It still cost me almost $130.00 and with last weeks meds and the nail trim almost $200 for a rattie that's not mine.
My Niece says she hasn't the money to pay for any of it but I can't sit by and see him suffer.
$ 409.67 since the 13th. :gaah:
I am having a test on Friday that hopefully rules out Cancer.
I can't handle anymore stress right now and Jim's not happy with me borrowing money for the vet bill.
Anyone want some sick slightly worn ratties? :D
Silly fuzzbutts.

This was Tonka's foot

Higher doses of metacam...and 2 days later...

Poor baby, sending him kisses and healing vibes. I hope that swelling goes down and he's more himself soon.
@lilspaz - did you ever learn what caused Tonka's foot to do that?

Cellulitis should be another option in which case, Baytril will be needed. If the swelling doesn't go down within a couple of days, it might be worth sending an email to Dr. Munn and asking about cellulitis and see if he'll give you Baytril for it.
But typical sprains get that big! It's scary but goes down fast enough with the metacam.
Hang in there sweet Kenny!!!

Isis broke her foot/leg. It got that big. We had a few sprains that were pretty close on my big boys. Edgar always caught his front legs and it would get that big.

Kenny is so sleepy and cute today.
He's moving around more but his foot looks the same.
Kenny is now on Baytril, Metacam and Doxy.
Dr. Munn says to call if it gets worse.
I am hopeful though.
Thanx for all your good wishes. :hugs:

Kenny had recovered nicely from his swollen foot with meds and was getting back to normal.
Unfortunately he developed a lung abscess. :(
It happened very quickly and despite my best efforts he had to be pts this morning.
Sweet kissy Mr Kenny-Kenneth, a lovely rescue who came to me when he was 6 months old.
A lone boy who after hard work found he loved having ratty friends.

Kenny. :thud:

Giving me his "I want treats" cute face.

Chillaxing with his cheese. :D

Ellie, Leila and Kenny together again.
Such a handsome boy. :cuddle:

I caught Leila grooming Kenny!! :giggle:

I have no doubt that because of me he had a wonderful life full of love, friends and food.
Kenny knew that I loved him and loved me in return.
While waiting for Dr, Munn Kenny snuggled into his favorite spot, (my ****s) and gave me kisses.
He looked happy and content during his final moments.
While I am sad at his passing I am also grateful that we found each other.
Play hard at the bridge with Ellie, and Leila.
 Till we meet again.
