So I think 2 of my 4 girls have respiratory issues at the moment because there breathing is sometimes loud and it just doesnt sound good at all. There isnt any red discharge but I dont think there has to be any for anything to be wrong. When I took Tyra to the vet I asked my vet to check her breathing out and she said that she sounded clear. But then I go home and whn I get to sleep I can hear her lound, congested breathing. It eventually stops but it worries me. I dont think my vet will be me any antibiotics unless she hears congestion in her lungs or unless Tyra is REALLY sick. I know shes not the BEST vet around but shes getting more and more practice with rats.

So I'm going to order some Doxy from this website:

http://www.pets-megastore.com.au/

But what should I order? Theres liquid in the small animal section, and then theres pills in the Dogs section. Which one do you recommend and what size bottle? I only have 4 rats so I dont think I need that much. Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!!

I've orded the Doxy liquid from this site in the past. My rats hated the taste of the stuff. Even when I added strawberry syrup to it they didn't care for it very much. I ended up tricking them into taking it by dipping the end of the syringe in baby cereal. When they went to lick the baby food off the end of the syringe I would quickly squirt the dose into their mouth.

How many rats do you have?

doxy is dosed at 5 mg/kg....2-50 mg pills wil make up a solution of 4 ml's of 25 mg/ml doxy. If its for one rat that will last a long time (over the 2 weeks before it expires).

Can you find out when the expiry date is?
That might give you an idea of how many to order.
Always good to have some on hand.
I wouldn't make up more than 2 weeks worth at one time as I have been told that meds you mix up are good in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Patrick has resp. issues at the minute and is being treated for it. I could hear it, but he is acting perfectly fine and as crazy as ever with no red around his eyes or nose. The vet listened and did spot a noise though. He saw one vet who heard the noise and wouldn't give antibiotics so i took him to see another and got some.

My last rat had a URI and it came on very suddenly (overnight) and he had no red around his nose or eyes either. He was that loud i could hear him breathin across the room. First and last emergency vet appointment ive had to make so far lol *touch wood*.

So far i've not had a rat with a URI AND Porph around the eyes and nose lol. They also don't look sick.. but i just *know* they are. Everyone else thinks im crazy. I think if you spend enough time with your rats then you can tell when they just aren't right.. kind of like a parent and their child.

Hope she gets better soon :)

IDK if it would be or not. I just heard that people like the pills better because they store better. Would getting a small bottle of liquid be better? Would it come with a syringe?

It depends on the expiry date... 50ml is tons. When it comes to dosing, it will be very small doses so it will last a very long time.

Kind of off topic, but how are the shipping costs and the delivery time for that website? I don't have my rats yet but I want to make sure I have supplies on hand in case someone gets sick.

It took about 2 weeks for us to recieve our stuff from them, and the shipping costs weren't bad at all. I think less than ten dollars and we bought a couple of items.
