My friend Krystal has just sent me a message,

Anna looks to have a swollen face and wont eat, she's taking her to the vet tomorrow.

What could this be? Abcess (sp) tooth? It's sudden, because I know Krystals babies are right beside the sofa. Any ideas that I can send her with?

Please pray for her, they recently lost Anna's sister Ruby, and are very scared to loose Anna too. I really don't want her to loose this little girl and leave poor Ellen without a cagemate :(

Abscesses can pop up pretty quickly. How old is Anna?

The best thing your friend can do is keep her warm and hydrated until she can get her to the vet. If she has Metacam or infant Ibuprofen on hand she can give her some as well to help reduce the inflammation, that would help reduce any pain or discomfort Anna is in. :hugs:

I told her to get her hands on Pedialite and baby food/cereal to try and get her to eat something easier than lab blocks. I also said to get an Advil or Tylenol syringe to try and give her pedialite in case she won't eat/drink to keep her fluids up. Little bodies can get dehydrated quickly.

I never thought about the ibprofin. What would be a safe dose for an average sized lady? I am sure she has Childrens Advil on hand, not so sure on infant :*(

Anna is only about 9 months old.

liquid Ibu is 10-30 mg/kg, but if its children it would be something like 20 mg/ml, and infant is more concentrated and is usually 40 mg/ml (less to get in the rat).

A 350 gram girl would get something like .18 cc to .53 cc with the Children's.

With infant you would half the dose... .09 cc to .27 cc

Another question, where would one get these syringes? I see a lot of smaller doses with rats and hate reusing those given with meds from the vet.

I'll pass along that info, but I am sure she doesn't have anything that small for doses :(

When I get meds from my vet she always gives me a few small syringes and when the meds are done if the syringes are still in good shape then I keep them

I have found places in the US that will sell these needleless syringes...but you won't get them at the local pharmacy. I always re-use the ones from the vet...just clean them well right after you are finished using them :)

I have a bag full of them from the kids and pets, I didn't know if you washed well you could still use!

I wonder if I can find wholesale...
