Ok so, my boy cain, I've made a few posts about. He started breathing REALLY heavy about 2 months ago, it was REALLY bad so I'm almost positive he has permenant lung damage. I got him on baytril and doxy for about 3 weeks. During this time, his breathing did not slow down at all and when he was at the vet she said his lungs sounded very clear. So I'm out of meds now and I have been for over a week he got down to skin and bones for a while and slept a lot. The last 3-4 days he started eating more again and has put on weight and is more active and i SWEAR is breathing seems a tiny bit slower although it is still fast. I'm broke for a couple more days that is why I have no meds but the meds did not seem to do anything. I did not know what else to do so I figured well I'll just give him some amoxicillin that I have for them stored.. I dont know if it did anything.. maybe not.

What I want to know is.. could this be another problem? I'm pretty sure they can't get better on their own lol or could this be permanent lung damage where he is better but will always breathe heavy? And when rats have lung damage how heavy do they always breathe afterwards cause it is still pretty heavy... Hes quite active still.. and again randomly eating more when he almost stopped completly half a week ago.

Did he improve after you gave him the amoxicillin?
If so, he may need to be on it for 2 to 4 weeks.
Often you need to try diff. meds or combos of meds before you find ones that work for a particular illness.

I'm not positive but a day or 2 after I expiremented and give him a tiny bit I think is when his breathing slowed. I'm going to keep up with the Amox for another few days to make sure. If not I'll have to get him to the vet and try something lol
I hope it works though... poor little guy, hes had a tough life, his brother passed and hes depressed Im trying to introduce him to the others but hes very aggressive when meeting new rats.

ok so I'm going to give it another day to be positive but I think the Amoxcillin might be working! I dont want to get my hopes up but I'm praying it works this poor boy has been battling this infection for SO long with no results I was always so used to getting baytril and doxy for my boys so it was strange when cains breathing didnt change AT ALL I was in panic! But it must be the Amox.. since last week.. he has put on a lot of weight compared to what he was. He was SKIN AND BONE.. because he was breathing so heavy he was starving himself to death.. I was smushing all of his food but still it seemed it just took too much effort to also eat. :( poor boy but hes gining more weight everyday now and I THINK his breathing has slowed since yesturday although it is still fast.. Oh my boy I really hope this works!.. I feel so bad for him :sad3:
